Title: Cranberry glass decanter
Post by: ANCIENTONE on August 22, 2012, 07:07:22 AM
Greetings from Kentucky!

I think this may be from the 1950's, but not sure.  It is 10 inches tall.  Any info much appreciated.

Regards,
Charlie

Beautiful!! could you take a photo of the bottom , also please take photo of the stopper out & the base against a white background.  :)  stopper looks to fade to blue at top or does it fade to clear and is just the photo? any info on the piece.

I'm not sure if it fades to clear or if it is just thinner at top. Here's the pics.

Nice job on the photos   :)  Ok 2 more questions Just need to be sure.  Is the stopper solid (not hollow)? Looks like it is solid,  The bottom raised area on your bottle, is it rough when you run your fingers over it?? (looks to be from your photos)

The stopper is hollow with a small hole through the base. The bottom is not flat, kind of wavy, with rough spot from where it was broken off.

Those bubbles look pretty consistent... I think that its really neat... Is that a specific technique Wendy?

Yes it is called controlled bubble,  Your piece is hand blown base & stopper. Broken pontail, Beautiful cranberry in color like runny raspberry jam ,sounds funny but all this tells me your piece is circa 1850  beautiful piece keep it safe  ;)

In this market hard to say search VICTORIAN GLOBE & SHAFT DECANTERS  and look for one close to yours (color, ruffle neck, blown stopper, controlled bubble, broken pontail) if you are lucky enough to find one and see how its priced. Personally I would not let it go for less than $500.00  but that's me, would it sell in this market for that probably not.

Very modern looking. You could have told me 1970s, and I would have believed you! ;D
