Title: Old wooden carved bed part?
Post by: any88 on August 24, 2012, 01:47:15 PM
Hi

Strange and well preserved carved peace that goes either on the wall, or on the bed. Its really old, but in excellent condition, has a shine to it. I just dont know what it is. It has been found by my mom over 37 years ago. I was on our wall for last 20.

hope you can shed some light on this.

Its most likely to be made of Oak,it looks to have a nice age to it,and as it is relatively small there does,nt look to be much in the way of curving to it,..its probably been a part of something bigger, but what i could,nt say...the carving looks to be well done...enjoy it for what it is,as to value...i,d say it was,nt worth much more than £15/20

looks like the center medallion from a cameo bed !! those three holes in back is probably how it was attached !!  if it was an openwork cameo it would have attached around the edge, solid headboard would attach at back !!

you know, that did occurred to me before.

Could there be picture of those kinds of beds?

If thats it, I think I have something interesting here, because I think those things could be lost easily, and enthusiastic collector could search for that "missing peace" to put it on antique bed from his collection

just google cameo beds and you can see lots of styles !!

I think it would be called a roundel and mounted on a bed much as Mart indicated. By the carving I would say it's from the last 1/4 of the 19th century.

"Piece out!" ;D

Strangely enough, this is the closest thing I see
(http://imagehost.vendio.com/a/35055721/aview/_Bn_rQsQ_Wk___KGrHqEH_EUEtp_cHe_BBLjY6tINcw___1.JPG)

The fact that mine has hole in the middle, where probably nail went, makes me think that this peaced efinitely was on the bed itself. no on the wall over it or something

dont think so !!  there are hundreds of different styles of cameo beds !! cameo bed just means a bed that has a medallion, it can be any shape or size,, oval, round or like the one you posted !! solid or openwork frame !! there is no rule !!

Ok. In that case, it interesting that first hundred pictures show only maybe 3 beds with actual medallions :)

BTW,I dont mean to be a nitpick or anything, those exclamation marks  make every sentence of yours look like you are shouting at me and preaching me for not knowing these things...  ;) :)

Using 'antique carved roundel' I came across a few more possible ideas for 'where'.

One of them being this.........

Given it is 8 ¼” in diameter ……. maybe it was made for use as a flue cover plate.

I see no issue with this roundel mounted on a bed's headboard. it makes perfect sense.

"BTW,I dont mean to be a nitpick or anything, those exclamation marks  make every sentence of yours look like you are shouting at me and preaching me for not knowing these things..."

88, you are correct as far as normal screen etiquette goes, but here on antique-shop.com we ....or at least, I.....see those exclamation points as Mart's signature style as well as signs of enthusiasm. It will be a sad day indeed when I sign on and don't see those exclamation points in every thread!! ;)

yes,, that would be me !  it just goes with my personality and lack of typing skills since i can hold the keys down too long !  will try to correct this but ain`t going to be easy after so many years ! to put a simple period after a sentence is boring !

I so agree!! Even seeing only one explanation point at the end of each sentence makes me feel a little discombobulated... And for such polite and invaluable information, Mart, you may write any way you want for all im concerned.

Cheers!!

You should just calm down !! It was more of a joke than anything !!

 :)

I actually mean what I wrote in this sentence above, but do you see how exclamation points made it look like?

I hope you saw where I came from, but it was just an observation and you did not bother me at all. In fact, I appreciate all the help very much, all of your help.

i have a rather outgoing personality and i never meet a stranger so using the doubles just fits me !  hubby hates going to the store with me because i come out knowing everyone that works there and a few that don`t !  its the only way i know of to exhibit someones personality on an impersonal computer !!

Mart - jumping in late here I know and hopefully everyone is past the whole conversation about the exclamation points but I just wanted to say that I also put exclamation points everywhere.

I think that when you aren't speaking to someone in person and you are communicating electronically where no one can hear inflection in your voice or see enthusiasm - it is the only way to convey that!!

So I also appreciate the excitement and enthusiasm of the marks that I use just as often!!

 ;)

Really now, Bigwull, .... with two (2) ll's .... you really shouldn't be criticizing Mart for using explanation marks (!) ….. when you are guilty of using commas (,) when/where you should be using apostrophes (‘). :D :D

A bad case of mistaken identity Cogar...i never criticized Mart that was another member..if you check back you,ll see,..as for being guilty...of bad grammar.....I will treat that remark with the contempt it deserves!!!.... >:(
