Title: Original Old Marilyn Monroe Poster?
Post by: KevinM on August 25, 2012, 07:26:26 PM
I purchased this old Marilyn Monroe Poster from the thrift shop a few weeks back and am trying to find out more about it. I've been unable to locate this poster online although I thought it would be easy to find it.

The poster is about 38 inches in length and about 19 inches in height. It's old and torn and missing some of the paper so I'm sure it's not worth a fortune in it's current condition.

Does anyone know when this poster was made and if it was a promo or movie poster of some type for one of her movies or was it an insert from a magazine?

Sorry I couldn't get the whole poster in one picture so I took a picture of the front and back while it was folded.

Thanks!
Kevin

sapphire, I'm positive it's Marilyn Monroe. ;) Someone has also written in ink on the back of the poster Marilyn Monroe.

Finally found her in the same red dress, gloves, earrings and fur in front of what looks like the same fire place I think. Although, I don't know when or for what promotion this picture was taken for.

If you look at the emphasis placed on her earring in the photo the answer becomes clear. It's a promo shot for 'Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend.'

bigwull, I wasn't convinced it was Marilyn either.........defi nitely not a typical face shot for her. I was thinking possibly Lana Turner or others.

BUT.........found this!

If you check the background......fir eplace screen/andirons, the cabinets next to it, they certainly match up.  Attributed to photographer Gene Lester.

sapphire, thank you so much for finding that! Looks like it's a 1956 advertising poster.

Although. I think that one is an advertisement poster with the picture of (copy of) the original poster (the one I have) and used by the Saturday Evening Post for advertising Pete Martin's candid report (series of articles).

That poster Sold for $675.00 at auction and measures 28" by 40" and mine is 19" x 38".

Then again mine could be a copy of another, don't know since there is no visible copy rights or other identification on it. I'm going to look a little further for the one I have now that you put me on the right track.

The following link has the Auction results and writeup about the Saturday Evening Post Poster and the rest of the information.
