Title: Brass Kerosene Lamp
Post by: hubruff on August 26, 2012, 07:48:47 PM
Here is another pick up from an estate sale.

I'm looking for a little info on this lamp.

Here are the details.

On the bottom of the base there is a plaque that says "Solid Brass & Brass Plate", "Irving Schwartz & Co." it also gives an address in Cleveland Ohio.

What I did find is a few other brass items with a similar plaque, but these say in quotes "Contempora" which I think was a line title that the company came out with. This lamp does not have this title. Also engraved in the burner is the word "Eagle" and I couldn't find anything on that.

Also it's sorta rusted and stuff. What is the best way to clean something brass plated, without damaging the brass. I want it to be shiny but I don't want to ruin it.

This stuff is best for polishing electroplated metals e.g epns=electro-plated.nickel.silver,and brass plated items,

I tried to use some polish that says it works on brass, but it didn't really make a noticeable difference. Maybe the grime is rust... does polish remove rust... maybe I'm not dealing with brass plated (although I think I am). It's smooth so it doesn't feel like rust, but I don't really know what to do.

Also I couldn't find anything on the eagle, or the Irving Schwartz?

Found an Irving Schwartz, one of five brothers who built the Paragon Oil company in NY. I wonder if this may be a connection?

Also found a wee bit more on Irving Schwartz & Co. in Cleveland.......

I think your 'Eagle' burner  is a mass produced product. If you do a Google Image search for Eagle lamp, there are plenty that come up, plus lots of reference on the web related to several brands/lines of oil lamps. I know there are a few on the forum that are quite familiar with lamps, so you'll likely gets some great help and info when they come across this thread.  ;)
