..........and stock pile the water. Anyone got instructions for an old fashioned bomb shelter?
-
Lots of old bomb shelters on this side of the pond....only last year a Nuclear bomb complex was sold near Comrie...in Scotland..see link...it went for around £150,000....see link....there.s lots of non nuclear bunkers and most of them...sell for a a pittance....a friend of mine bought one in the village of Edzell...where we stay...for £250... its 10ft underground..and is the size of a large static caravan..28ft x 12ft... and he has re-wired it.and kitted it out as a holiday home with a difference....and has bookings well into 2014....come to think of it...don,t you have a storm shelter underneath your house....or am i getting confused with America....
http://www.wowhaus.co.uk/2011/05/24/former-nuclear-bunker-for-sale-cultybraggan-bunker-cultybraggan-camp-comrie-in-perthshire/..there,s also a nuclear bunker near Anstruther...and they hire it out for Weddings Parties,...special occasions...see link

Wonder if I could get one shipped?? ;)
why don,t you make your own...all you,d need would be a 30ft shipping container....a big digger machine...a little ingenuity....and hey presto...one bunker...its just like burying a gigantic coffin.....fit a couple of fans, one for sucking air in and one for blowing ciggie smoke out.get one of those portable tent toilets......a generator for electricity... a month or two,s supply of Pepsi...but .then you,d only have half a container left....so maybe you,d be better with the 40ft er...what do ya think :D
-
I find it mildly amusing that as technologically advanced as the world is today, when nature decides to dictate conditions, it's us 'older generation' who are often able to cope much better.
My first thoughts today were to pick up more lamp oil, grab more rechargeable batteries and long burning candles, dig out the old quilts, dust off the camp stove and round up my old aluminum pots. Water run will be tomorrow.........pa ntry is already well stocked. This weekend I'll have to drag the chain saw out of the shed and get at all the alders that have sprung up along the drive and stow away deck furniture.
I don't have a Blackberry or iPod grafted to the palm of my hand, so outages won't be any bother. As long as we're well stocked I won't have to don my backpack and make any more three mile treks through the woods and down the highway on foot to get supplies.
The last time we were trapped in here (for ten days) my youngest accompanied me through three foot drifts and burying by snowplow to get to a store that had power. Once we stocked up she apologized and headed out to hitchhike to the 'camp' where a woodstove supplied much missed heat and she hoped to be 'reconnected' to the rest of the world. ;)

Don't think I could dig a big enough hole by the end of the weekend ;)
I've got an older daughter in Bermuda who's going to get hit with it late Saturday/early Sunday as a Category 2. She's already got her instructions from mom......who will be anxiously watching for online activity. From there it's supposed to head straight towards us, hopefully not bringing her along with it.
-
we got snowed in 2 years ago..for a whole 2 days...and by snowed in...i mean the car was snowed in....we could still walk out ..me with 2 old tennis rackets tied to my boots and Avril slip sliding away....and all Avril could think about was..."how am i going to get to Work"...sod work...i said...our healths more important...your work will always be there....2 whole days of ...I,m going to strangle that woman........

...does she have a dog called Toto!!
-
Wouldn't want to totally jinx her!! :D
But she does have red shoes ;)
-
where are you located Sapphire ?? haven`t been watching this one !! last one gave us one breezy day and a 10 drop flood !!
-
We had a hurricane last summer. We had fireworks. Trees kept hitting power lines. We were huddled around an old TV hooked to a generator. We didn't have electric for days! Where's this storm heading? I'm lucky my sale is next week. Maybe there'll things flying by to add! ;D

Nova Scotia (Canada, eh!) ;) They're saying by Monday it will be a Cat. 2 or possibly 3 and expected to make a direct hit. We get hit with a 'decent' size one about every three years......but nine years ago this month we got walloped with Juan (then a few months later with White Juan). Leslie seems to be following much the same track and tropical storm Michael is blocking it's normal swing to the north east, so I'm not taking any chances.
Here's a shot of Juan's track and if you follow the line you'll see a red dot.......that's me burying that shipping container wullie suggested. ;)
-
wow !! you are right in the middle of it !! hopefully it will go to the right and you will be on the dry side !! i think !!
-
Shoot, I'm pretty close, too! Do you have an extra container? My red shoes are for sale! :o

I'm thinking we're both going to have yard sales........to have enough room in that container ;)
-
i know its not a laughing matter.....but you crease me up....i,ll be thinking of you and your other half over the weekend.....and i,ll be keeping an eye out....and an ear in....
-
Be safe Sapphire!!
-
move to Scotland ? its amazing how many people live on fault lines and how they still build property on land that can flood !
-
that sounds like many of our southern most states !!
-
Lol. your not kidding. I have 3 dogs to fit in that container!
-
batten down the hatches Sapphire and keep in touch if you can !! would hate to have to bring my catfish pole and fish you all out of the Atlantic !!
-
greenacres, I'll have to get one that'll have room for my one, so there should still be plenty of space for your three .........hubby's only getting an oil barrel :D
mart, you won't have to fish me out of the Atlantic but you may have to dig me out from under a lot of 30 and 40 ft trees. ;)
Some signs of it veering a little more eastward as it comes this way.....that would be a blessing.

you forgot about all the 2lts...of Pepsi....you,ve got to have your priorities right...save the dog then the Pepsi/cigs...then...oops nearly forgot...the other love of your life....who might be stuck in an oil barrel.......you,re not alone...with Avril, it would be the same..Bess,Poppy ,Blackie....Wullie.... :)

The eye is tracking a wee bit east of Bermuda now and with the weekend ahead of us, maybe it'll just meander off into the open ocean. Fingers crossed.
Did send a reminder to daughter to stow her scooter somewhere safe or she could be spending some time looking for it. ;)
-
;D ;D ;D Sapphire you crack me up! Are you sure he'll fit! :o Two tornadoes touched near near two days ago. Scary, thank god no one was really hurt.

One way or the other.......he will fit ;D
I keep a sharp eye on those damn twisters......hubby's cousin moved to Mississippi. Believe me, I've learned more place names/locations in the last couple of years. Constantly googling 'where' when there's a threat.......so I can figure out how close and how much I should worry. Just gave her a shout out last week with Isaac threatening. She messaged me back that she was comfy and safe........visitin g back home in Cape Breton, NS. ;)
-
Well we can breathe easier here. Other than heavy rain and high winds which is just starting, mostly from a system coming from the west and picking up moisture from Ol' Leslie, she is skirting us and tracking northeast.
If you know anyone in Eastern Newfoundland wish them 'safe passage' as Leslie is hitting them dead on, with Michael on her heels. It's not going to be a quick pass over as they're both moving slowly. They were hit like this in 2010 and it was not good.
Time to go out and move the vehicles closer to the house and hoping the power lines are still up in the air when I come home from work. ;)
-
Its good to know that you,re,re still in one piece....
-
glad to hear that !! will say a prayer for those in its path !!

Two tornadoes in New York City! Hard to believe!
-
only one...the other was a hurricane.....accor ding to CNN,
-
Oh, I had heard one hit Brooklyn, and one hit somewhere else like Queens. I live in Philadelphia. We just had down pours, but New Jersey's shore had some really bad rip currents.
-
Two tornadoes in New York City! Hard to believe!
I had to reread that as I was sure I'd read wrong the first time. That's incredible........a nd frightening! I hope there wasn't a huge amount of damage and no injuries.
-
They were all very lucky. There were no injuries. This weather has been crazy! I pray for a snowy winter. I couldn't take a buggy summer like we had. We need the cold weather, plus I like a good snow.
-
ones in NY were F-0 and F-1 tornados !! Kind of small as tornados go !!
-
Your so right. I have family in Omaha. They get tornadoes. Still someone could still get hurt.

And the rains came ..............
Just leaving to head into the village. Our 'corridor' area has villages following along the Shubenacadie River. I'm anxious to say the least to see what has happened to our own. We live set away in the woods with the highway between us and the main road.
This is from North River, 50 minutes away from me.
-
A scene like this, make,s me glad that we are 185ft above sea level,....
-
I hope people have flood insurance. When I had a house at the beach it was mandatory.

These huts seem very popular in the UK. Americans are far more obnoxious. http://southshore.idx.prufoxroach.info/details.aspx?firstrecord=0&VIP=REIPrudentialPropertySearch&searchgeo=margatenj&x=23&y=13&propertytype=1%2c2&sort=5&sortacdc=desc&searchtype=2
Congrats to Andy Murray winning the U.S. Open! The Brits finally have a great tennis player. Henmin I didn't like. He was never great!

yes pray for them..and hope it does,nt come your way....

They've had Emergency Response teams in place before this even got fully in play....... evacuations were immediate and relief stations stocked and manned. Some communities were totally cut off, but everyone jumped in (literally) and helped out.
Unfortunately the downpour (think last numbers were around 130 mm - 5+ inches) coincided with high tide from the Bay of Fundy.......which is famous for the highest tides in the world and which in turn flows into the rivers through and around Truro and surrounding areas.
One thing about Maritimers.......we dig in and help out.
Thanks so much for your concern and offer though.......shows that you don't have to be 'over the backyard fence' to be neighbours. ;)
Wullie, they're about 30-40 min. drive from us and situated lower, in more of a basin. We've had some through our villages as they follow a river, but nothing in comparison. I was in tears seeing pictures of the race track in Truro. I basically grew up in the barns and trackside there and over the years have spend many contented hours shooting pics of the horses. It's located in the middle of the worst hit section of the entire area, adjoining a mobile home park that was first to be evacuated. The loss, even temporarily, of the track means financial hardship for hundreds......both directly and for spin off services. It could also, in these times, mean the end of our track altogether.
-
Here in Missouri we got about 2 inches from Isaac, and the rivers are still low because of the drought. Good thing we don't have the Bay of Funday to contend with!.

I wonder why they haven't given this more air time. Hopefully things will dry up soon. Did you move all your belongings as high up as possible? Is there an area to make your things safe? It's hard loosing sentimental items.
-
We are going to get the tail end of Hurricane Leslie...tomorrow apparently....judgi ng by the weather now...he/she has already arrived...if its like this tomorrow, i,ll be firing up the woodburner...

greenacres, we didn't get slammed like this. Luckily we're a about half an hour away and on higher ground. Those in our village who live along the river didn't fare as well, but nothing like the town of Truro and surrounding areas got. The road into Truro from here was under water and blocked off for several miles on the Truro end, the other three older roads in/out were also flooded. Only one road off the main highway was accessible and luckily it was the one that led directly to the hospital.
I have friends there and my lifetime stomping ground, the race track...........it's hard to see that kind of devastation to property and belongings. Another good friend lives on the reserve which is mid way between us and Truro. Both access roads there were flooded so they were completely cut off. She is 6 months along with a high risk pregnancy and her hubby drove through the flood road to get her into friend's in Truro so she could reach the hospital if necessary. She took some pictures along the way and it was frightening.
The first picture is their drive out the 'road' on the reserve, the second pic is one of the access roads that leads off the main highway onto the 'old' highway into Truro.......this turn off led down into the 5+ miles of flooded road into town.

Geez! That one picture looks like a lake! He must have a good truck.
-
Geez! That one picture looks like a lake! He must have a good truck.
Apparently that cop waiting on the other side of the 'lake' (previously open field) was not too impressed with their escape. Guess he was worried he might have to get his feet (and arse) wet. ;)
-
You think he would have got them boat! That was dangerous. They could have floated away. Or send someone out there with more b*lls if he was afraid!
-
As Mart can attest, down here in Texas they get so big they can be classified as a US State sometimes with all the debris/size.
But, No matter what the size...I pray for anyone affected by them!
-
The Tail of Hurricane Leslie has arrived, big style....the west coast is the worse affected with the Skye bridge closed and ferry sailings disrupted...here its raining cats & dogs...and its baltic..and the wind is howling...i,ve fired up the woodburner....and we,re sitting toasty....i,ll probably end up with corned dug legs....with sitting too close...Avril keeps telling me..."any closer and you,d be as well sitting on top of the bloody thing"...braw!.... ;D
-
It's cold there already? There is still warm here. Actually, it's a perfect time of year. Not hot and not to cold, just right! I hate rain. I'd rather have snow. Snuggle next to Avril. Body heat will keep you warm. ;D
-
???chance would be a fine thing....i,m hooked up to a bloody machine most nights...as i suffer from Sleep Apnoea....and the noise of it drives her nuts..so its ..me in my room and her and the dog in hers.....the joys, the joys.....

-
Good lord wullie! I hope you guys don't get swamped like you were over there a couple months ago (or was it less?) I know it was just before my son arrived in Leeds and there was no access north at the time with all the flooding.
To give you a bit of a chuckle, this is from our daily newspaper. A fine example of us Maritimers' ability to not only laugh at ourselves but also be able to make light of a not so 'light' situation. A little tweek at Truro's calamity. ;)
-
That's "Riplely's Believe it or Not"! ;D That's a great map of our "Great Lakes"! Lol They should sell those.
