Curious if anyone knows what this statuette is and if it's worth anything? I can't seem to track it down online, cause I'm not sure what to search for. There are no markings that I can find. It's about 16inches high and pretty hefty and solid. Not sure if she is dutch, french, etc. ! Too knew at this! haha
-
Almost everything has a mark of some description....you say its a solid piece....are there any chips,is the base white, you say its quite heavy, how heavy, a couple of lbs ..more...??...i,m thinking it is made from what we here in Scotland ..term as chalk....but was is in fact, China clay...a pic of the base may help,
-
looks Italian
-
Here is the base, but covered with felt. Probably a stupid question........... but should I tear the felt off and look for markings underneath?
-
And this is an easy 15lbs.......
-
I,m none the wiser.....
-
I think they are trying to say yes....some days it comes hard for us! :) Yes! Gently~
-
between the felt and paint is a white band that would indicate a ceramic or chalkware !! if its that heavy,, i would guess chalkware !! tap it with your fingernail and see if it sounds hollow !!
-
At 15lbs i doubt that its hollow....and my first thoughts still carry...chalk...or to give its correct term china clay..
-
sometimes weight estimated is wrong !! could also be white metal !! doesn`t really look like it but can`t see details that well !! metal when tapped will sound different from chalk or ceramic !!
-
Can you please post dimensions?
-
and a correct weight..use,kitchen scales perhaps..........we could ask you to carefully remove the felt on the base....to see if there are any marks......but...th e last time Mart and I, asked someone to do a similar thing........it ended in a disaster....so we won,t ask! :D
-
bigwull,,thats the first thing i do on a painting, print or almost anything that is framed !!
-
Me too, ...and 99 times out of a hundred...it usually works...then along comes.....the odd one....and bang!...oops, i broke the glass and chipped the masterpiece.....but its ok...i touched it up with a marker pencil!.... :D
-
i fail to see how that happened !! you lay them flat on a table or floor, remove tacks, lift out !! its easy !!
-
Well, Mr Religous pic man did,nt heed or advice did he....but no worries he still thinks its worth 5K even with the touched up score....
-
he might be able to convince someone that it is !!
-
16" and 15lbs? I would guess concrete for that weight. But it does appear as chalkware. Not able to interpret any more other than that..
Kinda reminds me of Shirley Temple.
-
Shirley Temple....WOW...wel l before my time.....like i said at the beginning..it looks like a chalk figure....and the more i think about it...i remember as a child...which was,nt that long ago....we used to pick up similar ornaments at jumble sales...just so we could have a years supply of chalk for, ..what we now call graffiti...but back in the fifties....graffiti,had,nt been thought of....and these chalk ornaments had a thick metal mesh core, that the clay had been modelled over...
-
bigwull.....respect your elders! After all....how do we know what the antiques are? LOLOL
-
Who knows...thy might be older than thee!,,....or more boistrous, rowdy,...or hard to handle.... ::) ::)LOL

I'm wondering would it be safe to try and steam that felt off? Just enough moisture to help loosen glue without doing any damage?
Would be interesting to see what, if any markings are on the bottom. I've googled my eyes out looking for a boy with an umbrella and basket......keep coming up with Hummels. :P
-
LIke any water or liquid - it can ruin chalkware so be CAREFUL. Steam should work but the best best is to peel the felt off slowly and then with a BARELY damp cloth SLOWLY & GENTLY rub the felt away. You can always refelt.
I would be very curious if your piece has metal on the inside. On the earlier pieces and larger pieces they had metal "skeletons" which made them more durable! This would account for the weight as well.
