Title: Antique or Just Pretty Bowl
Post by: Kimmienemo on September 16, 2012, 08:14:45 AM
Here I am again!  I want to first thank all the folks that have been so patient and helpful (Bigwull, Greenacres, Wendy177, Mart, Cogar, KC - I hope I haven't forgotten anyone).  THANKS!!!

As I have mentioned before, I am trying to go through my parent's things.  They both had very interesting childhoods and kept lots of family mementos, most of which I recognize, but a few I don't or don't know the history of.

When going through a box of mom's depression glass, (which also housed quite a few pieces of uranium glass  ;D) I found this bowl.  It is about 7.5' in diameter and approximately 2" tall.  It is incredibly heavy compared to the other depression glass pieces.  There are no makers marks on it.  It has (at least I think) an unusual bottom to it.

I am wondering if it is and old bowl or just a nice piece of crystal - perhaps.

Don`t think its crystal !!  Looks like a piece of pressed or pattern glass !!  Its different !!  Have to wait on someone that knows more than I do !!

I agree.  It is different!  The bottom little "feet" are really strange.  It is as though there were all ground flat.  The ground surface is very, very smooth!  Don't most pressed glass pieces show marks (small lines) where the mold pieces were joined?  This piece has no such marks.  It has marks on the bottom that look like concentric circles.  Almost like the lines you seen in a blown piece.  The line are on the bottom "corners" near the feet.  (They show up in the closeup of the little feel things).

What makes me think it might be crystal is its weight.  I just took it off the kitchen scales and it's 944 grams.

Of course, since I'm new to all this wonderful glass stuff. . . I always think of crystal as being lead crystal.  I'm probably using the wrong term.

Your piece was made by New Martinsville glassware company circa 1936-1939. This is what would be considered Elegant glassware of the depression era as it was  a better made glassware and was not hugely mass produced. It is a three part relish bowl , color called crystal. Very pretty piece!! Here is a photo of your piece in Red  :)

Anytime KC  ;)     Bigwull many companies here called it cranberry glass also but New Martinsville called it red. Also the better quality accounts for the heavier feel.

Thanks to all of you.  I couldn't understand why it was so heavy!  The quality issue makes sense!
