Hi everyone!
I bought this dining suite from an old lady. She doesn't know much about it but it is made of solid rosewood, it is hand made and carved.
I *think* it's style is Queen Ann? Would you know what style it is? how much roughly would it be worth?
It is extandable, in the pictures there is one insert in and there is another identical insert to extend the table even further. It has 8 chairs.
The cushions on the seats are loose.
I am just really interested as we have never owned any "nice" furniture and it is a gorgeous set. Any info you can give me would be appreciated.

I,m not convinced that this one that you,ve bought is Rosewood....it looks to be too reddish...its more like mahogany...
see link to a Rosewood...albeit with only 4 chairs
but its nigh on $1400

Thank you so much for answering. It is awesome quality, I just wish I knew more about it.
I actually wanted mahogany/jarrah but she said it was rosewood.
She bought it 20 years ago for $2000 (would be alot more these days of course) but all she knows is that it is hand made. The whole mechanism of the extension is completely wood. No metal at all. It is very heavy.
Would love to know how much it's actually worth but also style and any other details.
I am enjoying the detective work! it is fun!

Unless this table and chairs is a true antique...then it does,nt mean that because it cost $2000 20 years ago...that its going to be more today....it does,nt always work like that...because if it did..then today this table would be worth in the region of $5000....which i very much doubt....if on the other hand it was bought 20 years ago but was significantly older then it may have appreciated..in value.unless there is a makers mark...like say Chippendale...then i feel that it will be quite difficult to determine a true value....which means we can only make comparisons...here are some examples of prices.today...

Good point. Just crawled under to look for maker's mark. Couldn't find any. Would be great if there was a maker and a year stamped on it!
-
By the way.. I am in Western Australia if it makes any difference?

If it was that easy...we would,nt be having this conversation ;D

LOL true! but it would not be as mysterious either. "Made in China 2003" :o

Yes it makes a difference...i,m in UK...but most of the real experts are in one of the colonies that we lost..... ;D ;D ;D....now maybe i should go and hide for the rest of the day.....
getting back to the cost...2000 aus is approx £1250 today....so go back 10 years and it was £1= 2.6AUD...then back another 10...so its reasonably safe to assume...that this table/chairs cost in the region of £750 ..10 years ago...but i can,t find an exchange rate for 20..so its a guesstamate...say £600..give or take....and if it was a bespoke item which is most likely..seeing as how the mechanism is all wood....then there may not be any to compare it against....so all what i,m saying is pure conjecture......... just enjoy it ...because i would....

Could you please take a picture of the underside of the table and chairs.
Look under at joints for uneven coloring/staining of item!
There are so many sets coming into the southern US (if the US is where you live) that are reproductions being sold that are being imported from India, South America, etc. The coloring on them is an unnatural red (which someone noted earlier). (They come in by boat load and have been for over 25+ years now).

I,m beginning to wonder about you KC...she has said she,s from Western Australia...post 10....i,ve got a spare pair of specs if you need them.... :D
-
Modified Queen Anne leg would tell me its after 1950 !!
-
It is definitely stained underneath in a different colour to the top. I will take photos!
Original wood colour is reddish/orangy. Stained darker red.
Photos coming.

I had to use the flash when I took those images, the colours in the pictures look much more vibrant/stronger than they look with the naked eye. I guess it might be a chinese knockoff? lol
I have to say she did not try to pass it as an antique, we were just curious about it, I am learning what to look for when you buy antique. Great lesson here!

Its not an antique but appears to be quality !! Hard to say what year as countries went to styles at different times !! The UK has many of the same styles we do but time periods are different !!! Theirs are earlier than ours even though similar style !! If I had to put a value on yours just from what I can see I would say approx $1500. USD !! Could be a little more in Metro areas !!

Bigwull, I have been fighting a migraine for over 2 weeks and ended up in the hospital 2 different days...so it does affect my vision!
However, I was just didn't go back and read! Oops, my bad. Thanks for keeping me in line!
Wonder how much it would cost to send your specs to Texas? :) Thanks for the offer!
-
Migraine ??? What was that I heard was good for a migraine ?? Gin soaked raisins ?? Or was that something else ?? Can`t remember !! But what the heck,, try them anyway !! Lot of gin,, few raisins !
-
Thank you!
Here in Australia $1500 would get you spray painted MDF lol.
That dog in the first photo ate my previous dining suite (hence the new one!) which cost me $1500. It was a veneer coated pressed wood and it cost $1500. I think when it comes to furniture USA is so much cheaper than Aussie.
Needless to say I will pull his teeth out if he even looks at this dining set in a funny way...
Sorry about your migraine KC!

mart - what do you mean by "modified queen anne legs"? I tried googling it but cant figure out how to tell.
-
Queen Anne used cabriolet style legs which is aka Queen Anne style. (resembles a double curve of an animals leg!)
Just another variation of it. This one isn't as curved!
Thanks princess. I know prices are higher most places...we are pretty spoiled here.

She means its similar to a Donkeys hind leg.... ;D
-
The oriental link in my first post the table there almost mirrors your table.top.....and thats Chinese
-
I only know chicken legs.. city girl here!
And true about your link, the top does look the same. I only paid 500 Aussie Dollars for my dining set though :)
-
Just enjoy it, and at 500 AUD....you stole it at that price....in fact its down right criminal......you must take after your decendants..... ;D ;D ;D....unless you are from the indigenous stock... ;D ;D
-

HA, those 8 matched chairs are worth $500 US.
I think you got the "real deal" there, ..... except for the cushions, .... I'm sure they are repros. ;D

Over here in the UK...dining tables/chairs...don,t fetch much...a couple of months ago we needed extra dining chairs as we had more people coming than we had chairs...and i went to Talors auction house in montrose Scotland...and got a Stag dining table with 4 chairs and 2 carvers...identical to this pic....total cost £10 + 20% commission...i did,nt even bother keeping the table..i chopped it up for my woodburner....i only wanted the chairs...
-
over here dining tables/chairs are cheap as chips...see link...ok only 6 chairs but still reasonable...but at auction i see these only fetch around £120/160 all day long

These are the prices in Westen australia:
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-perth/jarrah+dining/k0l3008303
Of course the nice ones are worth more.
I think what I got being hand made, carved etc would be worth quite abit more than what we paid.
The cushions - she got made, they are loose. In fact I am going to replace them as soon as I figure out which fabric/colour I like to go with it.
-
I have no doubt..that in Aus....you indeed got a bargain......and it is a really nice table....as for being handmade....well most pieces of furniture of this standard are...well they are assembled by humans...its machines that churn out the bits,.....mind you the way they are progressing with Robots....in Japan...it won,t be long...before....th ey,ll have us out of a job...like they did with the car industry.....
-
I feel your pain with the puppy eating your last dining suite!! We always have 3 dogs (when one passes on we end up with a new one) so at some point I always have a puppy in the house. I have had more kitchen tables & chairs eaten than I care to count so my last set I purchased is all metal!! It came with a glass top table which I hated so the hubby made me a nice wood top! No more chewed legs on this set!! ;D
-
I like yer Cat.... ;D ;D ;D
-
Thanks halloween is real big around here with my 8 year old Nicholas!!
