Can anyone help me identify this item? I have done many searches, but can't find anything like it. I picked it up at an estate sale while I was looking for books. It was in the library. I am fond of Saint George and it caught my eye :)

Bigwull - do you know why they were called fibulas? Was that term used in Europe only or elsewhere? You always have the best info!

Fibula...or to give it is proper name Fibulae...comes from Roman times...it was used to clasp two pieces of cloth together,..So yes it did originate from Europe....
