Title: Antique Bottles
Post by: ANCIENTONE on October 11, 2012, 01:28:55 PM
Got these from a guy who digs around Lexington.  The first says OUR EXTRACTS PURE AND WHOLESOME WILL NOT BAKE OR FREEZE OUT.  The second, W H BALLARD DRUGGIST LEXINGTON KY, I found reference to Mr. Ballard but not the bottle.  Evidently the first black pharmacist in Lexington.  The third is a flask embossed with WARANTED FLASK. The others have no embossing but are neat shapes.  Any info much appreciated.

They remind me of the bottles that those peddlers used hawk during the 1800,s...for a dollar a bottle.....filled with a cure-all elixir.....that was probably sugerelly water...

Here the cure all elixir was usually mostly alcohol !! You didn`t care if you were sick if you bought enough !!

$202? Did you mean $20?  The ones I've seen on Fleabay are around $20 but this one seems to be a older.

over here in the 50,s at fairs and markets they used to sell a "long life elixir."..."good for giving you a good clear out".....it said on the label....it turned out to be Sugerelly water & Cascara...which as i learned later on ...did indeed give you a good clear.out.....and rooted you to the toilet pan for hours on end... ;D

Some are Garenteed, Warranted, Honest Measure, but they also say full pint, half pint. The little round ones are more valuable. Mine have not been tumbled yet.

Nice collection!!  Here's what I have so far. The one in front is the WARRANTED FLASK from above.  Are the others flasks?

Yes, The more embossing the better. The expensive flasks have scrolls and embossed pictures.

Not sure on the age of this Gordon's, much newer, but I thought it was neat still with the cap.

I love that word. :D
we loved it too as children...we used to make our own...we,d save up our pennies...then when we had  sixpence, we,d run off to the chemist shop and but 4 sticks of liquorice...as they were only sold in 4,s...but 4 sticks made 4 pts,...then we,d go down to the pub,....and salvage 4 liquor bottles....then back home,...break i stick into smaller pieces, put them into a bottle, add 4 ozs of fine suger and fill the bottle with cold water, stick the cork in,then put the bottle into a dark cupboard...and leave it for a month....that month was always the longest month of our young lives.....we kept checking it almost daily...wishing the water would turn darker more quickly....it never did.....it always took a month...
then when the  month was up..we,d get our bottles of sugerelly...and savour that dark sweet liquorice taste....as if it was the  Nectar of the Gods, ....great memories....

Great cultural exchanges around here! I thought you were using the word as an adjective!

I love this forum. . . I am ALWAYS learning something.  If it's not an English lesson from Bigwull, it is a repair seminar from handy-folks like Mart!  However, I desperately need to be educated on "tumbling"?  Is that some way of cleaning?  Are antique bottles more desirable uncleaned or spruced-up a bit?

I will be going through two large cardboard/paper barrels full of antique bottles that were given to my father.  My uncle was a backhoe operator in the San Francisco area.  On a few occasions, he uncovered old landfills.  I want to make sure I don't make a mistake when sorting through them.

I would not tumble any old valuable bottle !!  Tumbling in sand polishes the surface !! Its OK if you are going to keep it but if value matters,, I wouldn`t !!

Thanks, Mart.  Some of the bottle still have residual dirt left in/on them.  Should that be left as well?

They use some interesting things in those bottles. Products made with what we call illegal drugs today are very valuable.
