Hello! I hope everyone is doing well today. I have recently purchased via an auction a lot of photos. They had them listed as cdvs, tintypes, cabinet photos and ambrotype photos. However, upon looking more closely into the 2 that were supposed to be ambrotype photos, they appeared to be different. At first I thought they were both ambrotype. (however now I am starting to question the photographs I have. I am seeing different types (descriptions) on a website and I question the types I have...interesting).
The one photo appears to be a Daguerreotype because depending on the angle viewed the image can change from a positive to a negative.
The other appears to be the Ambrotype because it is mounted in a case with a black backing so the underexposed negative image appears as a positive.
My question is what can daguerreotypes be valued around? Are they rare? What about the Ambrotype?
Also, I have some tintype photos, and on a few of them they have added a rouge to their cheeks. I wonder if this adds to the value of the tintype?
Thank you ahead of time.

p.s. here are a few pictures of the tintype with the rosey cheeks (the rouge cheeks) - then one big photo of all of my tintypes.
Thank you again!

They are not in very good shape. I've been studying Daguerreotypes. Where are the boxes and what type are they? Yes they can be worth some money if they have there box. They can run $250.-$350 if really good. Maybe $75.00 in poor shape.
-
By the way there are a lot on ebay.
-
They didn't have the boxes. Truthfully, most of the photographs were not that great. I went in it blindly. I was only almost positive it was a Daguerreotype, because of the way I had to hold it to see the picture. Otherwise you can't see if very well. It had to be held a certain way or in light a certain way to see the photo clearly. When I read online that the Daguerreotype's had boxes, I was wondering why this one was in this frame. Maybe that is why they thought the one was an ambrotype, idk?...

It doesn't mean that it's not a "Daguerreotype". It just means it may have lost the case. Check the on ebay. Some still sell very well without the box.

Don`t suppose they have anything on the back to tell who they are ?? Tintype pics are pretty common !! I have had quite a few over the years !! Few bucks each is all they sell for !!

If you have a Daguerreotype with a good topic for a picture it can be worth $1000,00 and up. It still a good fine.

When dealing with these old photos, subject matter is the key, Topping the list is Civil war era, esp. with a gun, Then Outfits can mean a lot, esp. Ladies with wonderful dress and Hair style, Dead babies are hot too, but can't stand them overall. Children dressed up can do well too. Type is second to subject, I have posted so many Tin Types CDV and old Paper photos at work, for the most part you get a few dollars a piece, but Civil War era with guns can go into the hundreds. I have yet to get my hands on one of those. Did get a Edward Curtis Orotone at work, that made over $2,000. Just for intrest Here is the old post for that orotone.

Amazing photo Ironlord!

Wow thank you so much! You are all so informative! It helps a lot! (my brain still not concentrating well...maybe one of these days I will be fixed right). Anyway, I have only one CDV photo with a name on the back (the other photos do not have names - the tintype or other types). The CDV has Silas Wood on it, he's supposively a famous artist of some sort. There is a photo in there, that interests me, because it is as if I have seen a photo of him somewhere. I will look through them again. There is also a very nice cdv card that has a beautiful red back to it.

Yes, landlord, that is a wonderful photo! And I wanted to say I will go to that link and look at the types of photos. There are a few that I was thinking were not even CDV (maybe something close). I have some photos of African Americans. Oh and about the photos, I do have a few baby photographs and one of them dressed up. One is just of the head and the rest of the photo seems faded out (hard to explain..at least for me anyway, as you know. :) :)
Everyone on here is so intelligent. I hope with age some intelligence comes to me, because I sure haven't had any up until now, ha ha.

Meant to ask earlier but how is the recuperation coming along ?? Afraid I can`t help much with the pics !! But any with historical links can do well but hard to tell which they might be without names !! I always checked the back of the ones I had but never lucked out in finding good ones !!

Thank you for asking Mart! :) it is slow and we are feeling the surgery didn't help (I developed other symptoms). Although we were told it could be 2,3, or even 4 years until I see improvement. Too long. :(
-
Will say a prayer that it goes much faster for you !!
-
I appreciate it! :)

Best wishes for a successful recovery!
I wanted to add a comment about the subjects determining the value. Post-mortem photos are becoming popular with collectors. So are animal photos and of course anything with a Civil War soldier, especially one who is identified. The more unusual and appealing the subject is, the more collectors want it. Fancy cases also affect the price. You can get a good sense of price from the daguerreotypes on Ebay. Standard, unidentified portraits don't command such a high price unless the subject is very good looking and dressed to the nines.

I was watching the post-mortem pictures on eBay for a while and the bidding is crazy! They're very hot right now.
