Title: Antique Throne Chair
Post by: DANTE5 on October 22, 2012, 07:18:14 PM
Hi Everyone,

I have this large high back upholstered chair with arms and metal casters. The story of this chair is that I picked it up after it was tossed for garbage on the street. The chair measures 43 1/2" high X 26" wide, recent upholstered (30 + years?) Seat is 23" X 26" (Seat support beams 4 1/2" wide) I don't know if that matters, inside measurements of back from seat 30" X 26", arm rest 3 1/8" wide, claw feet on front and straight leg on back with aged casters. It has the original wood frame, I also notice the original paint appears to be black. I've researched in an attempt to date this piece and I just don't know enough to complete this task.  I live in an area where there are not many antique dealers.  Does anyone recognize this work?   Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nice find !! Its an Empire style armchair or parlor chair !!  Haven`t seen all the pics yet !!  Not many are painted most are stained a very dark color !!  Could have been painted and redone at some point in its life !!

I don't know if I've ever seen any that were painted from the get-go. This looks like a definite later paint job, and the casters probably got wet and corroded.

I can`t say that I have either,, but there is always a possibility !! I would think that if its original finish,, is a really dark stain !!  I have seen a few of those that were almost black !!

Thanks for input ghopper1924 and Mart....The color of the stain (paint) is brown and it also looks black in some areas.

I remember reading something on antique woodwork and it stated that usually you can tell the age of a piece by the color of the stain.  If it was stained dark brown...the color would appear darker and look almost black.  Mart..your sentiments exactly.  If that being the case, this information was referring to dating a piece from the 18th Century.   Any feedback on that theory?

Not likely !!  The casters indicate a date of early 1900`s !!
