Title: Old maps found at estate sale... (PIC HEAVY)
Post by: samatwwe on October 29, 2012, 11:51:38 PM
Hey guys, I was recently at an estate sale and found these two maps hanging on the wall together. I saw they weren't very expensive so I thought they would be worth buying. After looking at them inside the frames they appear to be very old. The paper is very thin in some spots and is definitely an older-style paper. I was wondering if anyone had any insight to these maps as to value and if there is a market? I contacted a map "expert" and was told they were worth between $400-$500 each and are of the 16th century. He said they are of Spain and hand made by Schenk. I don't know how to know if they are authentic or not. Any help is appreciated!!

The East coast is having the Storm of the Century....and you think you may have the Find of the Century,...old 16th century maps would have been made of a quality paper..most likely vellum...i can see from your pics that they have been folded at some time....the wooden frame is of an DIY,nature,, the cardboard back is modern...as to this Cartographer that said these were worth oodles of dollars,...did he have a hands on inspection....

I live on the east coast, south eastern Pennsylvania to be exact...and it did not affect our area very bad at all. We never even lost power. Anyway, he did not have a hands on inspection, just these pictures. This is why I would like to know more about them and/or how to get them authenticated. He is however, one of the largest map dealers in the country and has maps valued in excess of $20,000. The owner of the house that I purchased these at was a History professor at a local college which leads me to believe that these may be authentic.

The style is similar to the bottom map pictured there... Any idea on how to get them authenticated?

The only way you can have these authenticated would be to get this Map specialist..to have a hands on examination..there are only two ways you can go about this, either..take them to him...if he is not too far away..or to send them to him...if you were to send them, then they would either have to be crated, or the maps removed and placed in a map case...then sent via registered mail...i don,t see any other way of doing it....

Do you think this would be too pricey? I would definitely have to mail them because he is in California and I am in Pennsylvania

Why do you think that? I found my maps on this site!! They also seem to have an edge like mine do and appear "pressed" into the paper. The colors on my map are definitely done by hand because they appear like a highlighting marker and are not "spot-on", appearing to be hand drawn.

My first impression is repro....BUT I would recommend that if you truly believe you have an original...get it appraised.  If it is an original and worth $$$$ then shipping is miniscule to value.  If not, then you will have closure to that question.

Did you check the size ??  P. Schenk was mainly a publisher and printmaker although the family did a few original maps,, this was not one of them on the list. They did use plates that were done by others. Looked at one of the early maps like this and it is considerably larger than this one !!  22 1/2 X 24 1/2 I think,, can`t remember exactly !!  Are you sure that your map isn`t a 16X20 counting the part covered by the frame ??  That size is the single most common size for stock frames so most all printmakers use that size or a few of the other stock sizes rather than having frames made for an odd size  !!  Frames like this are made in bulk !!  I also looked at a few similar to this on ebay,, thgey had the same centerfold !! That makes me think it may be from a book of some type !! Schenk did do some world atlas,, small possibility it came from one of these !!
Just my opinion,, have it checked !!
