Title: Bounty crew member had historic ties to ship
Post by: sapphire on October 30, 2012, 04:32:16 AM
Claudene Christian, who sadly passed away in hospital, was the g-g-g-g-great granddaughter of Fletcher Christian. This past August when the Tall Ships made their stop in Halifax she had the opportunity to meet with and learn from some of the original builders. The Bounty and her sister ship, The Rose, were both built in Lunenburg, NS.

May her family find some comfort knowing she fulfilled many dreams and touched many people while crewing on this beautiful ship.

They never found the captain. He was never rescued. Horrible way to die.

Having crewed a historic tall ship for two and a half years, this has been difficult news. I served as helmsman and on the foredeck crew of the privately owned tall ship Royaliste, a gaff-rigged ketch, when she was in Sausalito on San Francisco Bay. I won't mince words with this. They had no business attempting to skirt a storm of this magnitude. It was a huge error on the part of the captain, who I believe must have been under a lot of pressure to make their appearance schedule. A captain is responsible for the lives of his crew and this tragedy was completely preventable.

People don't get it that these ships are made of freakin' wood and that weather, wind and tide will all play a role in the time in which a ship arrives in port. All they care about is that their event goes smoothly. This isn't Disneyland and there are no tracks under the water.

This is Royaliste, my old ship, when she was on San Francisco Bay:

I am so sorry to hear of the death and also of the ship itself.  Praying the captains will be found....hopefully just waterlogged as said above.

Great pics Tales !!  But I would agree,, You would think that with all the advance notice of Sandy,, they would have turned around !! You do not try to outguess these storms,, you will often lose !!
