Title: E. Maclet Prints?
Post by: samanthadear on November 04, 2012, 02:52:15 PM
I picked these up at a resale shop, and am thinking they are prints (albeit old ones), but I don't know for sure. I looked up some of his other work and it seems to be a lot brighter and more colorful, but most of his other work seems to be in oil and these appear to be watercolors (or prints of watercolors). So I guess I am now wondering if these might just be watercolor copies of his oil paintings that an amateur did? In any case, I would like your opinions! Thank you!

What is the size of the print ?? Not the mat just the art piece !!

The back is papered over, so I can only measure from the front, but the mat is 11" x 8" and the art piece is 8.5" by 5.5".

So not very big.

Can you tell what kind of paper it is on ??  These were done in a series of 4 so most likely copies but need to compare size to size !!  Few of these on ebay !!

To me, these have the appearance of prints that have been sunlight damaged / faded over the years.

The back is papered over with brown paper. The actual art pieces seem to be on a rather thick type of paper. That's about all I can tell.

That's a good theory Rauville! They do seem old. And that explains the discrepancy between other (new) prints of his work that I've seen and mine.

TOTALLY agree about the fade out.  Unfortunately that happens to all of us oldies!  LOL

The brown paper on the back is just a dust cover !! I would like to see one of these out of the frame !! Normally prints have the publishers name on it somewhere !!  If it has none,, its possible that these may have been sketches that were done prior to the original art piece !!  Many artists when working on site will sketch in what they want to paint and later finish in the studio !!  Thats more what they look like to me but even those sketches could have been copied !! I agree that it looks time faded but they are still lacking in some of the colors I have seen in other paintings by Maclet.

It doesn't have a publisher's name anywhere that is currently visable. Just the signature. Should I cut the brown paper on the back open?

That is up to you !!  Were you thinking about selling them ??  If you live close to a frame shop,, take one there and ask them to remove the dust cover so you can see the piece itself !!  If there is anything on the paper with publishers name ect. or any additional info,, write it down and let them replace it a put another dust cover on !!  Should cost less than $10. !!  I do mine myself but you may be more comfortable with a framer !!

UPDATE: I finally got brave and took off the brown paper off the back of one of the art pieces. Here is what I found:

Here's what the writing says, I think:
Parsonage
3/4 a blue line
cream matt
1871/1195

Getting closer !!  Those are the framing instructions !!  Parsonage,, could be frame style,, 3/4 blue line, cream matt ,, Some matts have a trim line in different colors !! On a cream background but,,,Looks like these were possibly reframed at some point !!  Framers do not use tape like that !! That looks like masking tape !!  There is one corner that is not held down by the tape,, can you gently raise that piece that has the writing and see if thats just a piece of light cardboard covering the art piece !! Have to look close as they may be kind of pressed together after the years !!

This is what I found when I peeked at the edge. It doesn't look like there is any cardboard backing, just the dense paper.
