Hi!
A friend got this item at an auction tonight and we wondered what it is. It looks like it is made totally of leather. It is 6" tall, 5" across the widest part, 1.75" across the smaller end and is 1/2" thick at that wide part.
It is pretty different looking and we can't imaging what it would be used for.
Thanks in advance for any help.

A milk cow "calling" horn? ;D ;D ;D ;D

Seriously Cogar?

He might not be that far off his eggs....it reminds me of a duck call....or goose....something to do with hunting....it,ll be interesting to know what sound it makes if it blown through....
-
Mighty small for a megaphone. They made lots of leather ones but they were much larger!
I would be interested in the sound it would make as well!

I wouldn't be surprised if Bullwinkle showed up at your door if you try it out.

True, could be, for a small "wall" or "deck" cannon.

Kind of what I had in mind but older and not for beer !! Supposedly the thick leather keeps chilled wine cool !! Would have been a bottom, and this the top ?? Opening big enough for a cork to go through ???

My first impression was that this item might be a 'decorative cap/spout' for a 'fishnetted' jug , as in for display only .
Really dunno what it is !

Nothing is going through that....look at the interior pic....it has a leather "beam" across it!
-
It looks like it is made totally of leather.
Looking at the 3rd picture it looks to be wrapped in leather.
A wood form maybe because the insert is in 4 pieces and looks pretty thick for leather.
-
KC,, couldnt tell if that was attached to both sides or just appeared to be !!

liquid would go through it...because if you look closely...you can see right through....
-
Any possibility of it being the bell off of a car horn from the old horseless carriage days?
-
could be...stick a rubber ball on the end...and get a muted toot,toot... ;D

These characters seemed to have a similar puzzle. Excerpt from The Leather Funnel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
"That is a curious thing," I remarked. "What is the history of that?"
"Ah!" said he, "it is the very question which I have had occasion to ask myself. I would give a good deal to know. Take it in your hands and examine it."
I did so, and found that what I had imagined to be wood was in reality leather, though age had dried it into an extreme hardness. It was a large funnel, and might hold a quart when full. The brass rim encircled the wide end, but the narrow was also tipped with metal.
"What do you make of it?" asked Dacre.
"I should imagine that it belonged to some vintner or maltster in the Middle Ages," said I. "I have seen in England leathern drinking flagons of the seventeenth century - 'black jacks' as they were called - which were of the same colour and hardness as this filler."

You to me it looks like the game where you put the ball in the open part and a stick in the narrow part and then you could fling the ball, like an early lacrosse stick.

Okay Wullie....let me restate my comment previously....meant that the wine bottle wouldn't go through it and yes I should have said that but didn't....and yes something liquid can go through it.....(did I miss anything?LOLOL).
Thanks for keeping me in check!
