Title: Tiny Vintage Pot with Vented Lid???
Post by: rockbock on November 22, 2012, 01:06:37 PM
I can't figure out what this is!  I've googled ember pots, spit pots, potpourri/incense burners, tea steepers, and medicinal pots.  Nothing seems to fit...

I believe this pot is made of copper or brass, but I'm not certain.  There are no markings at all anywhere on the pot.  The diameter of the pot is only 3" and the handle extends another 3" beyond the edge of the pot.  The lid has four vents.  The lid spins to open or close the vents.  The lid is removable.

Can somebody tell me what this is?

Even thought maybe something a baker would use for warming milk when a vanilla bean is added !! Only problem with that is that it would need a handle on the bottom for pouring and this does not have one !!

Would that be this large ??  Thought it may have fit into something from the grooves on the sides of the bottom pot !!  Had to go into the kitchen and look around !! But don`t use chafing dishes much!!  Never saw one of that size though !!  Must have been a good size pot !!  Doesn`t seem like it would keep it very warm if using candle heat !!   Hot coals maybe Ironlord ??

Thanks for the replies.  I posted a photo with the lid off above.  This one is just to put the size into perspective.

Any thoughts on age or value, if any?  If it is part of a chafing dish, I don't have any of the other pieces.

I think ironlord is correct - I found some pics of old chafing dishes and this does appear to be a burner for one of them.  I NEVER would have figured that out on my own.  Thanks!

Not likely copper !! Copper is and was too expensive for this type use !!  More than likely brass sheet !!  Looks more yellow than copper color !!

First of all...need dimensions!  LOLOL

But I think Mart has it right on (if the dimensions are right).  We had those doggone fondue pots growing up and use denatured alcohol to heat them with adjustable flame burners like this.

Now if it is a large pan....they did make items like this to sit on the top of a stove to humidify the home in cold dry weather!
