Title: Pinch Hit tobacco tin sign
Post by: nottaClu on November 27, 2012, 11:30:32 AM
Hello everyone.  I stumbled upon this site in hopes to get some information, and a valuation of a sign that I have picked up.  It is exactly like the one in this link.  http://may12.hugginsandscott.com/pl/46016a_pinch_hit_tobacco.jpg (http://may12.hugginsandscott.com/pl/46016a_pinch_hit_tobacco.jpg), but in much better shape.  I have looked around the internet and cant seem to find much info on it.  Any help would be appriciated.  Thanks a ton!

Where did you get the sign ??  We need to see your sign,, not someone elses !!  Reason being,,so many of these old signs have been reproduced thats impossible to tell much without seeing the one in question !!  Forgot to ask,, how big is your sign ??

A friend of mine got it from his grandma.  We have since lost contact, so I wouldnt be able to find out where she obtained it.  When I get home tonight I will snap some pictures of mine and get them on here.  Is there certain things I should look for, markings ect?  I will also grab the dimensions when I get home.  Thanks for the help!

No.  It is like the one in the link in the initial post.  I saw vast amounts of references to the one you have posted, but not the one I have.

the one you have...on a few of the auction sites that i,ve looked at,,,had an estimate of between $150/$300...with a start price of $10....and it ...never even took a bid....

The only one I found that sold was this one.
http://www.auctionscc.com/archive/200803/baseball-memorabilia/190/ (http://www.auctionscc.com/archive/200803/baseball-memorabilia/190/)
It went for $264.00.  Is ebay the best to try and unload things like this?

ebay is a fickle place...you just never know whats going to happen...i recently sold an ornament that had a top end value of £500..or $790 approx...it cost me £5...and it only made £77...but i was happy...it all depends who wants it...if at all....

I saw that one for $264. it was in only fair condition !!  But that auction had another one,, same sign,, a while back that was listed with an original Pinch Hit tobacco pouch still full and never unwrapped !! Bid started at $150. but ended with no bids !!

Bizzare.  Guess you just have to find someone who wants it.  I got a Jack Daniels sign the same time I got this one.  I will take pictures of both and will be back on later tonight.  Thanks for all of your replies.

one of the problems with having an original...is...the re are tons of repo,s...at a fraction of the cost...so unless you find a dedicated collector of Babe Ruth..memorabilia.. or Tobacciana...relate d signs...then an ordinary punter who likes the look of this sign is going to go for a cheap repo...see link

You didn`t look up the sign company on the bottom ??  Sorry but AAA made all kinds of reproduction signs !!  Just google AAA Sign Co. Coitsville Ohio and you can see a wide selection !!
Is the JD decopage on wood??  What are the little stickers I see on the back of both signs ??  Chances are these were bought at a flea market or such !!   They probably had a bunch of them !!

Yes...AAA Sign Co. basically flooded the market with reproduction tin signs starting in the 80's (?). Most of them were being sold for around $8-12 back then. I would doubt if they have kept up with inflation since then. :( :(

if you look at the one i posted from craiglist..you,ll see that its identical to yours, and their priced at $15....if yours was genuine...i doubt very much that it would have been in the condition its in...

Fake as all get out. Cool signs for a studio or garage, but not worth anything. Like anything on eBay, the market changes from week to week. Eight months ago, I got lucky and sold this Coca Cola sign for $406. I had never seen one go above $350, and they usually hovered about $250-$300. I though I had more pictures to show some of the differences between this true porcelain one and the reproduction ones, but I seem to have lost them.

Just remember where these signs were used and the age and if it looks too good to be true,,it probably is !!  Always look up anything you see !!
