Can anyone tell me what style of rocker this is? This chair was my great great grandpas chair and I am interested in finding similar chairs. Thanks.
-
Wow that is really unique! I've never seen one like this and there may not be one. It could be a homemade one-of-a-kind piece. What years did your gggreat-grandfather live?
-
Can we get more pics ?? Bottom, back and if thats a cushion for the seat, take it out and take a pic of under it !! Looks like the side panels are three boards ?? Where are you located ??
-
I think Mart would call this empire revival? Anyway, ca. 1910-15, oak. Hard to say how much it would be worth, but I agree with Tales that I've never seen another one quite like it, although the robust, high-armed look is common enough.
Unfortunately rockers are not usually worth a bundle, so maybe $100-$150 for this, depending on overall condition.
-
I,d call that a ..shed built Bitsa....value over here...under a tenner.= $15 :D
-
That looks like something made for a hotel.
-
Also please provide some up close photos of any hardware. Screw heads and nails especially.
-
Actually Ghopper I think this is more of the Craftsman period chair although with the weight and style may be a transition piece somewhere in between the two !! Would certainly fit with either !!
-
Thanks for the responses. My brother actually owns this chair. The original owners of this chair (I think) would have lived in central Nebraska in the late 1800's - early-mid 1900's. I have another great grandparent (unrelated to owner of pictured chair) who lived in central SD who had a very similar chair (slightly bigger, more elaborate arm rests). Im not sure if my great grandfather was the original owner of the second chair, but if he was, it would have been purchased in the 1930-1950's. I am just looking for any info regarding the style of the chair in hope of finding more like it. Ill try to get more pictures.

I make no apologies...but..I will take back, saying this is a bitsa...having searched a good bit more..i,m now of the opinion that this is a, Mission,Arts & Crafts,...or Craftsman style from 1900-1910..see pic of similar....
-
The arts and crafts period was between 1860 approx and about 1910 !! They were getting back to simple lines and individual craftsmanship !! You can see that in the mission style chairs and furniture of that period !! Some of these craftsmen didn`t follow the same trends and branched off into their own design forms !! Thats possibly why you can`t find another like yours,, there may not be one !! Thats not to say the maker didn`t create another chair but when he did varied it enough so as not to look exactly like this one !! They had a lot of freedom to create back then !!
Look at the bottom of the chair !! A few did put their name on them !! Or factory mark !! Not often but check anyway !!
-
Thats nice of you Wullie !! But whats a Bitsa ???

Thats nice of you Wullie !! But whats a Bitsa ???
..a Bitsa...my Dear Mart...is .."a bit of this....and a bit of that".....its a Scottish thing... ;D
-
Oh !! Just curious !!
-
Look on the inside of the back seat rail...see if there are any marks there.
I'm leaning toward a the 1910 time frame. This is a very interesting combination of Arts & Crafts/Mission/and more. If you look at those, the fronts on the rockers section resemble that era. I imagine this chair is REALLY heavy...which is a good thing . Older woods were thicker and much better aged wood.
I REALLY like this chair.....the more I look at it the more interesting it is. I agree, I have never seen one like this before!!!!!
Can you take a close up of the bottom, of the construction, etc. Thanks!

Here are some more pictures. My brother talked to my grandma and she didn't know much history either. She did say this chair came with a matching couch but I'm unsure as to where that is now. She also said, both chairs (the one pictured and the other one I mentioned upthread that was owned by another unrelated family member)were probably purchased in the Lincoln, NE area in the early 1900's. THis chair has been reupholstered but the original tacks have been reused. The fabric underneath is also new as well as the screws and L brackets underneath. We believe the other hardware and springs are original. So is there anyone here in the Lincoln area that is familiar with this style of rocker? Thanks for all your help! I will post some more pictures.

Give me a couple of days and I will check a list of A&C furniture mfrs !! Will take a while so don`t get in a hurry !! I doubt seriously that your chair was made anywhere in Nebraska !!
-
i can see that its had a mending bracket fitted recently...screws have Philips heads...
-
Looks like it has been reconditioned, .... refinished ..... and reupholstered.
-
Well, it looks like (the collective) we got the date right on. I'd say an empire revival/craftsman mix, with the emphasis on craftsman, mainly because of the beautiful quarter-sawn oak.
Agree with Mart that it was probably NOT made in Nebraska. Chicago or Grand Rapids seem much more likely.
-
The thing I love about Oak...is..it gives off good heat when..its in my woodburner....
-
It's not beyond reason to think that this might have originated in Lincoln. Who knows?

If it's anything like the prison industries furniture in Missouri then I doubt it. It's nice enough but not even in the same ballpark as this rocker. In any case I don't think that prisoners here were making furniture in the teens anyway; it was more like textiles and/or shoes.
-
Over here...they make Mail Bags...and Germ Warfare suits for the Military.....
-
Wullie quit burning up history!
-
That,s easy for you tae say..what wi yer..Formal Entrance,..and Dining room...but spare a thought fur me an pare Avril...freezing wir socks aff...wi nae central heating...and only sheep an coos fur company..... ;D ;D..and any wi..eh only burn wit a dinnae hae room fur... ;D
-
So far I have found nothing to indicate Nebraska as a possibility but this is a long list and haven`t had much time to look today !! I am (like Ghopper) looking at Grand Rapids as a likely candidate !!
-
I'm still trying to understand what you wrote Wullie. I know i have trouble hearing some people talk with thick Scottish or Irish accents...but I find myself leaning closer to the computer to try and understand you writing with your brogue! LOL
So, is firewood or coal so scare there that you really go to auctions to get furniture?
-
Hi KC,...I shall write this so that you don,t have to lean closer to your PC..i would,nt want you straining your neck...Its not that firewood/coal is scarce...its just that over here its so damned expensive...here are some examples of cost...Kerosene heating oil...1000litres = $1112.6940....1 ton coal = $232,...1 ton firewood, can range from...$120 for soft wood...and up to $300 for seasoned hardwood...Natural Gas...is very expensive..as is Electricity...Our average bill for Electric is £800.per year...and propane gas for our cooker..works out at $50 for a 19kg bottle and we use 4 per year...but for me to get a big van load of furniture...approx 3 ton...which last for a couple of months is only $50...the above prices are based on a 2 bed small house...i,ve got a friend who has a big 4 bed..with 3 reception rooms, and he goes through 3000litres of kerosene a year..then there,s the Electric cost on top...average..$2500 per year....then there,s our petrol/ diesel which is $2.40 per litre.....So you see it is expensive to run a car and heat your home...on the + side...we have free medical care for life....free dental, free eye care..so there is some advantages about living here...

KC, it'll work better iffen you just squint your eyes and keep reading. Don't stop just because the words look to be misspelled, .... let your subconscious mind figgure it out and tell you what Wullie wrote.
Here, read the following "quickly", ... no pausing, to wit:
Olny srmat poelpe can raed tihs. I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Amzanig huh? yaeh and I awlyas tghuhot slpeling was ipmorantt! if you can raed tihs psas it on !!"
T'was easy huh?
But now if you try to read these words,
ltteer
mses
wouthit
iprmoetnt
istlef
raed
bcuseae
wrod
porbelm
frist
huamn
lsat
not so easy, huh?
And they are the same ones as in the above paragraph.

There you have it KC..If I can read what cogar wrote....and it was easy....then you should hae nae bather understanin wit em sayin when eh lapse intae ma broad brogue..but if yer still haen a problem..then...its no yer een.. but maybe yer bren...thats no takin it in....but fae now on wit i,ll dae is ell jist write proper...an throw in a guid Scottish word at the end ...and let you find what it says..then you can build up yer ain Scottish dictionary....hows aboot that...startin wi this one.."hud yer wheesht"... ;D.
-
LOLOLOL Believe it or not...it is true. The faster I go over it the more I understand!
-

Thank you Mart for taking the time to look into this. This chair has a lot of sentimental value to many people in my family.
