Looks like something a lady would use to keep a wrap around her shoulders !! Clip it on the front and it doesn`t fall off !! Just guessing though !! We had something similar but two clips and small chain !! I really have no idea !!
-
Looks to be a vintage glove holder / clip kinda like this one. They came in many shapes & forms

I am guessing a belt went through the chain ???
-
Actually mart you would hook the chain to your purse and clip the gloves with the pincher's :)

Shows you what I know !! I was not much on lady like stuff !! But learned something new !! Thanks Wendy !!

seems such a palavar...to go through...when you can simply stuff yer gloves in your pocket..or in the case of the ladeeeees..yer bags.... ;D

I didn't see any "spring" on it ..... thus it is a "tension" or "gravity" clamp for holding an item in a vertical position ..... via the weight of the clamp itself holding it closed.
Looks like ya could put a sheet of paper or a photo in the clamp and it would dangle there until you pulled it out.

What is the size of it?

This can also be a variation of this!
"Dress Lifter
Women relied on these little tongs to hoist up their skirt hems when crossing dirty streets. The 1880s silver-plated artifact — featuring the pantomime character Pierrot — would probably garner $120."

Cool!! Nice KC & Sapphire!!
-
Good find, Sapphire, .... I can see the mechanism better in that picture.
It's a per say "spreader clamp" and doesn't need a leaf/coil spring to function.
Similar principle as the old "push-on" wooden clothes (line) pins.

MYSTERY SOLVED!!!!
-
I think hands would be easier just to lift a skirt !!
-
One wouldn't be enough would it? They must of been used when they wore long skirts. The peice would have been use to make the skirt shorter, so they could run. Am I not right? In those days they held extra ball in their hand. If you watch older people play you'll notice it sometimes.

Might be something Tales could make use of ................... ... ;)
