Title: Hello everyone I'm new
Post by: HistoryHound on December 06, 2004, 08:53:36 AM
Hi! :D My name is Debra Thomlinson.  I live on Vancouver Island with my hubby and son.  I recently acquired from my grandmother a signed limited edition R.H.Palenske titled "Payday" in a very 30's frame in mint condition.  Anyone know of its value?

Also I am a relation to John Cabot the mariner who traveled in 1490 something to Canada.  I have his son's baby spoon Sebastian Cabot and other spoons from the family as well as a weird metal smoking pipe that has a round part at the end of it with holes.  I would love to know when that was made and what the values of the above items are if anyone knows

Plus I have a stunning water pitcher (I will take a picture of it) with four sorta tea cups that go with it made and hand painted in the early 1800's on the bottom it has a "J&C" with shamrocks on either side of the stamp.

Anyone know of the maker and value on THAT beauty!!!!!

It's driving me nuts not havin info

here is the jug, I couldn't get the markings to focus with my camera though.  The water jug stands 7"high and is 7 1/2" wide at the base, it has gold around the edges of its top portion.

Oh I forgot, the jug comes with four cups painted with the same motif.

Hi and welcome to the forums............. ...Your jug is what I consider a cider pitcher, but J&C is not ringing bells. It does have the look of a quality porcelain piece though. I would surmise retail $3-$400 and the cups probably $40 each. No chips, cracks, etc............

Hi Tim,

I'm Mark, Debra's husband.  Even if I cut this into 3 sections, by the time I resize to 10K (as listed at the bottom of the page) I've got such poor resolution I cannot see it.

I can post this image to the HP share to web site (our camera is an HP) or email directly, or the resolution may not be as good as I'd like.  Do you have any suggestions - is there a particular program you use to resize and not lose resolution?

Mark

Hi again.............I have had this happen before myself and have no good answers. I wish I was more proficient with my own camera. Emailing is not incouraged because of virus's etc.  I can't tell how long the object is perhaps 12"-14"? It appears to be silver and don't take this the wrong way but it resembles an opium pipe or part of. Opium dens were commonplace in the 1800's. Then again I may not even be close.

Hi....I replied as you were sending the new photo.............I'm at a lost. Not sure what it is. Look for any markings through a loupe. They might be hard to find. This might give some clues.............. .

Yes the object appears to be solid silver.  It came with my grandmothers 17th century spoon set.  I mean it was in the same box.  It is 8 inches long and has the look of being hand hammered, not machined.  I'm still looking for a makers mark.  I got a hold of a jewellers eye glass today.

Hi all- yes, I saw the post, and left it for the next day - then my ISP had big time problems - finally got reconnected tonite - hey, great stuff - word of caution - be careful posting anything that could give your personal info - I would not post a pic of myself (well, for many reasons aside from safety).   :o    KB

Interesting advice whoever you may be.  I have been a member of various forums for years and have NEVER had that comment made as we all do it on other sites.

I'm here for answers....... not criticisms.

P.S  Any news on the Palenske yet?
 ;)

sorry - not ever meant as criticism - just safety for fellow antiques lovers -

I had wondered about the silver thingie - on the pic, left end, it looks like it flares out a bit - could it be a tool to turn off a gas lamp?  Really stretching here.  They usually have a curved end. Then the other end, holes, could it have held incense?   Thinking of  possible religious object.  Very interesting piece.       :(           KB

 Hey I wonder if it is a religious piece.   hmmm. cept there doesn't appear to be any religious symbols on it.  The holes on the bulb part of it go right through it as if it needed ventilation for something, that's why I thought it was a smoking pipe.  I can't find anything on it ANYWHERE.  Good luck!

Does anyone know of the age and value of the Palenske print?

Thank you for all of your help :D

Oh and could the silver thing have been used for absynthe or something?  I believe that was popular.

Hi again Debra............I don't find a record of the print "Payday" but other works by him range in the $100-$600 range. I believe D&B suggested earlier a range of $250-$350. I agree.............

Thank you so much for the information.  Could that silver thing have been used for absynthe at one time?  I know it was a popular hallucogenic in the 1800's .  ???? maybe???
