Title: Old curling Iron or medical tool?
Post by: Simon13 on December 10, 2012, 06:44:33 PM
This piece is in bad shape. Just trying to figure out what it is. My first glance thought it was an old medical tool, then I was told curling iron, and a grape picking tool. The handles are silver but don't think I will scrap them for the sliver will keep them put them on a shelf.

What you have is a antique Victorian glove stretcher!!   Not a curling iron I have been in the  beauty industry for over 40 years!!

Correct mart antique curling irons often had wood (or a product that would not transfer so much heat as metal) handles so they would not burn your hands as the iron was placed over fire to heat!!

It was my guess to, but that is so cool glove glove stretchers... To beat to sell I think but they are a neat little piece of the past.

I'm trying to figure out what happened to the handles.  Do you think it had a stones on the handles and someone took them off?

Ya is kind of sad but I might just keep them around until I find ones in better shape. They are cool and are a snap in time. I hate scrapping stuff not sure why nothing is meant to last for ever. I just always feel bad when I do it.

Look at it this way..if you scrap them...because as it stands..they are damaged...the money that they can generate..will give you funds to buy something else,...that can give you pleasure...I,m like that..I never get attached to anything...I buy what I like...enjoy it for a few years..then punt it and buy something else...and it goes on like this....

I, on the other hand (and on the other side of the pond), would see if I couldn't find some cool cameo earrings (thus two cameos) or stones and have them added to the handles!

Just differing views!  Depends how sentimental you are with them.
