Title: Marble Top Side Table
Post by: Wickman82 on December 12, 2012, 07:21:02 PM
Hello,

I'm posting, because I do not have much knowledge in the field of antiques and I have a piece that I am trying to sell/get appraised. I live in New York City, and would like some help here before I schlep it to have an official appraisal done.

This side table that I have, was my grandmother's, and it has been in storage for quite some time. It has to be at least 20 + years old, but I think much more. I'm unsure of the type of wood it is made from...it may be cherrywood. I've attached pictures. It has what I believe to be brass footing and embellishments, and a beautiful marble inlaid top.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks!

Can you take the marble out, turn the table upside down and take a pic of the bottom so we can see the construction !! Also take one straight shot of the legs and feet (or at least 1 leg and 1 foot) !!  Cant see the feet well on the other pics !!

Can you give us the dimensions,i.e. dia of the top, and over all height...the wood has the colour of Yew...and if that,s an Italy stamp on the marble..then it is most likely Carrara marble that comes from the Tuscany region in italy

Thanks for the help!

The diameter is 18" (14" marble diameter) and it is also 18" tall. Here are some more pics as requested...

Well,, my opinion is 60`s or 70`s Italian import !!  Call it a tea table, occassional table or side table !!  In the south we call the small tables like this tea tables because about all they are big enough for is a cup of tea !! Sale price here in my area about $50. if your lucky !!  Your area may be more !!

The feet look like Brass Ball type.as for age...it could be older than 20 years...but tables of this design can still be bought today...I found this one...which is very similar in design...its a French Empire.Gueridon

It may be inspired by French Empire, but it's mid 20th century, probably 1940s or 50s, probably mahogany but could be walnut. This is the kind of tea table that you'd see with Duncan Phyfe sofas. Mart is right about the price, probably about $50.

Heat up a pin with a lighter and stick it into the underside of the marble. If it penetrates it is a faux marble that was commonly used in the 60's and 70's. If it is Italian marble in NY you could probably do a little better than the prices posted here. Maybe $90- $100. You need to sell it to an end user not a dealer. Try the 6th Ave Flea Market.

I've never seen faux marble stamped like that so I'll stick with my dates. You may in fact get better prices than those previously quoted if you're in NYC but it's all proportional.
