Title: Mystery Watercolor I cannot read the signature
Post by: yellowrose84 on December 12, 2012, 08:17:07 PM
Hello everybody!

I just bought these signed art pieces from my local thrift store and they are signed both on the print and in/on the frame. I think the first name is Dong Ling Y-somthing. I think these pieces are watercolor and on the back of the frame it has a number and title. They are numbers 16 and 17. #16 is "Our Path" and #17 is "Realization" and I just cannot find them anywhere. They look to be watercolor urban landscapes to me but I really have no clue. I am just guessing.

Does anybody know anything about an artist named Dong Ling Y-something? Or can anyone read the signature?!?

Please help me.

Take care.

Holly

You are right and I had no idea. I have never left the midwest! :D

I thought the name said Dong and now I am wondering if it is Doug. I have two pictures. I am trying to get a good pic of the second one.

This is not an expert opinion, but I think that these could be street art from Venice.  My best guess would be that the artist is/was local (or studying in Italy) and a tourist from your area visited and bought a few pieces and had them framed.  My basis for this guess is that I've done the same in a number of places, the work seems modern (not a print and signed twice, both on the picture and the matting, which sometimes comes with the piece), and watercolor is a popular medium for this type of art.

Could you provide a picture of the numbering and label/title on the back?  It may be a tag that came with the paintings or, if you remove them from the frames, the numbers and title might be written on the back.  If so, I think it strengthens the case above.

Happy to be proven wrong, though.

Just to compare, here is one I picked up in St. Petersburg.  I did the matting myself, so the signature is only on the picture.

I applaud all those who have artistic talent.  The most I can claim is to be appreciative.  Any artistic work I've done has been in the form of - ceramics and writing (poems + novel in progress) - and a little stained glass.  But, thank you for the complement, Mart.

Bigwull, I have to say, that your house is my dream home (emphasis on dream because I know reality doesn't always match up, and I don't know how I'd adapt being a city girl myself).  Maybe in my next life?  I'd love to see a discussion/posts dedicated to work done by the 'hero' members or others.  It really interests me!  I'd love to see both Mart and Bigwull's work!

Sorry, that's a bit off topic for the watercolors, but I felt inspired and needed to get it out.

Not too sure but sounded like Bigwull`s work was applied to walls and ceilings !! But he might get artistic with that roller !!  You never know !!  LOL
I taught an art class (private, not in a school) for several years,, My class and I had a few shows at our local gallery !! I sold a few and donated a lot !!  My personal taste runs to western/southwestern art but have done a few impressionist types !! Odd but I do not have anything here that I have painted !!  My daughter has one southwest style landscape of mine and that one and one of Monet`s that I  did are the only two I cared to keep but the Monet sold before the show was over !! I had a bunch on Picturetrail,, mine and my class but they delete it if there is no activity and when my hubby had colon cancer I had no time for painting or picturetrail !!
I hate to say it here on the antique forum but I even painted western art on antique oak tables for a client !! (Wagon train crossing the plains) !!  But thats where the money was !!
