Post by: lbrown13 on December 28, 2012, 07:50:03 AM
I am not sure what it is, but I have a friend that found it in a storage building.

Ditto what Wullie said...a small part of a larger inter-spatial, stellar, orbiting planetary system model!  :)

This is a vintage American Orrery...

Could be similar to that but this one seems to have many little arrows ??  Ocean currents ??  Center,, equator ??  I don`t see anything on it that seems stellar !!

Are the writings on it scratched in or written on ??  I found a few blank globes that were intended as projects that could be written on in chalk !!  Looked similar to this but just larger !! Found them at an antique globe site !!

Thats what I think too,, either ocean currents or wind !! Perhaps thats why the center equatorial line is marked as it is !!  Must have something to do with sailing or navigating the ocean in some way !!

I think that's an interesting item and certaonly has some age to it. I'd contact this person
simon.weber@dorotheum.at

or the V&A Museum.

Are the arrows at regular intervals in both hemispheres ? If so it couldn't really be ocean currents.

Surprised it's not marked somewhere.

They don`t seem to be regular at all !!  I agree that he should have this looked at by someone !!  Then come back and tell us what it is !! I have sure been curious !!

The arrows are spread throughout the entire southern hemisphere in the image. Might be the Pacific but i think this is a little more unusual than that. The marks at the equator are fascinating.
