Title: I am just going to stop buying on eBay
Post by: jacon4 on January 13, 2013, 01:50:52 PM
LOL, a little take off on earlier thread. Although i rarely buy anything on Ebay, every now n then I'll take a chance, this time i got burned though. Listed below are the facts, which are not in dispute.

1. Purchased an item on Dec 8
2. Seller set up delivery between Dec 17- 21
3. I emailed seller on Dec 20 as i was concerned it was going to be late
4. Seller emailed back that he "forgot" the order and would get right on it
5. Item arrived in Jan, i was not at home so called neighbor to take delivery
6. When i arrived home, opened the box and there was shipping damage
7. Contacted seller and he claims it was neighbors responsibility to open box and check for any damage before signing for item and there was nothing he could do.
8. Opened a dispute thingy with Ebay, we'll see what they say

You'll win that case easily. I sell a lot of items on eBay, and that seller is ridiculous. I have never told a buyer "tough spit" when there's a problem. The longest I wait to ship an item is twp business days, and nine times out of ten, it's the next day.

If it was shipped USPS,, it would have been illegal for the neighbor to open someone elses mail without consent of owner !!  Therefore was not his responsibility !!  Tell that seller that messing with someones mail is a federal offense !!  You win Jacon4 !!!

Well, seller advertises that he ships UPS or FedEx, the shipper is really Pilot Freight, someone i never heard of. This entire dealio was star crossed from the get go, how does one "forget" a $300 order.

The bottom line? Ebay sucks for online buying and it doesnt look real good for sellers either going by comments in this forum. The solution? buy online from Amazon and skip ebay altogether.

What kind of feedback did this seller have ??  Luckily I have not had a buying problem but I read the feedback and decide about biding or buying based on what others say !!  Usually a good seller that makes a mistake will bend over backwards to make it right !!  Or at least I would !!

I would ask for insurance even if you have to pay the extra dollar next time depending on what it is. I have the opposite prob being a seller and knowing well that the item I have in question (came in here to update and saw yours) that there was no way it could have been damaged as it was rubber and well packed. He's taken a month to mail back or more. They are right it is not the neighbors responsibility. That is against the law. Good luck. :)

OK, Ebay issued a refund today, almost a month after i opened dispute thingy. This is another reason as a buyer, Amazon is so much better, it's centralized, you are actually buying from amazon, not the seller where on ebay, you are buying from the seller/vendor.

No, didnt, has no clue whats up with seller. It was a large volume seller so i doubt there were health issues.

Oh oops! I was thinking of another thread at the same time I was looking at yours and responding, lol.  I guess what I was actually going to say on yours, is you were so right about it. It is mail fraud if the neighbor opens it up anyway whether you tell them to or not. At least you said it was shipping damage and didn't blame them for smashing up and putting it in the box, lol (like in my case).  Glad you got your refund. I never did hear from my buyer. :) :)

(sorry about the mix up on the post - you are probably like what is she talking about, ha ha).

Although there are things I don't agree with Ebay on, like fees, charges, and one time I couldn't get my money cause someone in Australia bought an item from me and shipping had to be proved etc, 99% of my transactions are worry free. I've been ebaying since about 2001. One of my biggest complaints, good deals aren't like they used be on Ebay, and Amazon is no cheaper. My other complaint, sellers are asking $300 for a used backpack they claim they paid over $400, when the maker sells them for $350. China is ridiculous, I'll never get a good deal like at a garage sell I got a set of Castleton Corsage for $15. I feel like sellers(high volume) think there's a lot of rich people out there ready to fork over top dollar, when in most cases, "rich" people don't need the hassle and will support local business.

Good points of ebay, cheaper things, need a special gasket for a carb, a light control module for car, things AutoZone wants to charge $500, you can maybe cut them cost in half and be satisfied on Ebay provided you check feedback and do you homework for what you're buying and who from.

LOL, not hardly, semi retired plumbing & mechanical contractor. Ebay is OK i guess for some things but, there are too many scams with it these days and it takes to long to resolve disputes, refund money, etc. The above purchase was for a shower pan, i was remodeling my house & delays really add to cost, scheduling conflicts with other subcontractors which lead to more delay. Bottom line, i have not purchased from ebay since that incident. Once upon a time, one could buy/bid on antique furniture from Christie's on ebay , those days are long gone.

Odd this thread pops up 2 years after incident. Odder still that yesterday, hamilton beach 4 slice toaster i ordered from amazon this past sunday nite arrived, no muss, no fuss, 4 day delivery, BAM!
ebay still has it's uses i guess but it is not what it was 10-15 years ago, far from it.

I have only had the one problem with a seller early last year that I won an antique silver piece for $5 (I was 3rd bidder) and they sent me a note saying they weren't going to complete the sale because they wanted more money for it.  They immediately relisted the item.  Ebay left it up to me what I wanted to do about the sale if I wanted to start a report, etc. But I would have to pay for the item first to file the complaint.  I opted to not pay but verified that it would not go against me for non-payment of an item and allowed them to access communications from the seller.  They then stopped the sale of the item and wouldn't allow it to be relisted on ebay.  I have kept tabs and the seller hasn't been back since (at least not under that name).

Great ending to the story - the piece above had lost all of it's silver (was recovered in a downed ship after years in sea water) and I was going to have to get it resilvered.  I got a much more ornate/collectible piece, mint condition, just a few months later for very little!

Ebay is fine i guess IF you have the time but it can be a very cumbersome time consuming process if something goes wrong.

Jacon4, funny thing, I just signed in on Ebay and what do you know.  There was a flag announcing "Introducing Sotheby's on Ebay!  A new experience featuring live auctions, streaming video and more..."!

Yeah, they used to have them and Christies too, along with many major antique furniture auction houses.
