Title: Hi Everyone! Here is a Civil War Photo, Man In Uniform TinType
Post by: xmelax38 on February 03, 2013, 05:09:50 PM
Hello there!

Here is a photo I bought at an auction (I actually figured I would have paid much more than I did, but because of the weather, there were not as many people there as usual - I was going to splurge - a present for my 40th Bday - even though it is today). Anyway, I bought it as a Civil War Photo - well, a Civil War Soldier (Tintype) in Uniform.  That is what they said. I am posting the photo. Could any of you give me your opinion if you think this is a Civil War Uniform? I have looked on the internet at different photos of what they say is a Uniformed Civil War Soldier and there are many that have different uniform types.

(sorry about the glare - I couldn't take it w/o one for some reason).

Thanks everyone! :)

Here is a similar Daguerreotype.

Is yours an original photo ?

The coat/jacket looks similar to the M1861 Enlisted Man's Frock Coat, which had 9 buttons and different colored trim to denote the particular branch of the Army.

(Branch Trim:
Artillery - Red; Berdan Sharpshooters - Green Coat w/Lt. Blue Trim; Engineer - Yellow; Hospital Steward - Crimson; Infantry - Lt. Blue; and Ordnance - Crimson.)

Yes, it is an original. The auction I bought it at, the auctioneer specializes in that area - photos, he buys and sells them & is good at identifying as far as the types of photos, but although he said Civil War, I still wondered about it. I didn't get a chance to talk to him after the auction, because I was in pain and was so ready to get home.  If I was not going to buy this, I believe he was going to. He was bidding on stuff himself.

I also see as I look closer at the photo with a flashlight (my eyesight is horrible lately) that it does look very similar to your photo. It looks like the guy in my photo has a scarf or something around his neck. Can anyone tell me what that might be?

Yeh, I had to take the picture with my ipod. I can't find the cord to our camera. It is MIA. My ipod sucks when it comes to taking pictures. :) If I find the cord, I will try to take a better pic.

Do any have the cases? If they do what are they made out of? It's the Percha Gutta cases that also bring the value.

Nice photos! You can buy the cases seperately if you choose.
