Title: found these old hooks
Post by: joemamma297 on February 03, 2013, 08:32:38 PM
i have an old boy scout camp near my house. its been shut down since 92. a few days ago i was looking under one of the buildings when i found these things hanging there. there hooks on springs. the spring is for when you compress it you can change the angle the hook mounts. i was thinking there for hanging things its just weird the place they were in. they were hanging in a cinder block underneath this building. i found a total of 7 of them. any one have any idea of what they are?

Please can you....

Can you get a pic of them IN the cinder block?  Was this a building that was build up off the ground on the cinder blocks?  Water/Elec wiring under the building?

Were the cinder blocks upright and lined up so the compression hooks were in a line that lines could be routed through them?  Were they on the outside of the foundation or further under?

What state are you in?

I'll try getting a picture tomorrow. And yes it was up off the ground on the cinder blocks. The hook ends were hung inside of the cinder block so they weren't being used to hang anything under the building. Also they were inside of the building. I wouldn't have seems them if I hadn't gone under the building. I'm in pennsylvania

From the sharp points they look like old fashioned meat hooks that would have been used in a smokehouse !!  Before wrapping was common they used to simply impale the meat on a hook, or some like my Grandad tied it with small rope !!  Do you know what was there before the Scouts ??  Can you also take a pic so we can see the plate at the back ??

My first impression was that as well Mart...and figured someone was just using them to route piping or something else.

HOWEVER, I haven't seen a spring loaded hook for meat...typically springs are on hanging scales and there isn't a scale attached to this.

Okay...had to come back...looks as if the spring adjusted the up/down position...not the angle....???????

Do these have a spring-loaded action?

Possible ladder (wooden) hooks ....

To me it seems like sort of bracket with the hook used for support similar to a piling.

some more pictures...

the spring is used to hold it in position. when it compresses you can change the angle.

and no i dont know what it was before a boy scout camp. i think it was always just a camp.

When you compress the spring like that it changes the angle,, but does the spring also compress the other way that possibly releases the top so that the whole thing
could be moved maybe left or right ??  Maybe to slide it along ??  I am still thinking meat hooks especially looking at those points !!

I believe a handheld meat hook would not have springs and would have a wooden or metal handle that is perpendicular to the hook.  Antique meat hooks are fairly primitive, contemporary ones are simple as well.  A meat hook that hangs from a rack would have a round device allowing it to slide along the rack - kind of like a pulley.  I am not an expert but for the above reasons I'm not sure these are meat hooks.  Unless they are meat hooks that are simply missing the rolling mechanism from the top.  I do think they are some type of industrial hook, but the exact purpose I honestly can't say w/o doing more research.

Not hand held !! Could be missing a part but also could have been fixed position along a wall in small deli or smokehouse !!  When not in use the hook would be turned flat against a wall or rotated outward for hanging hams ect !!

Mart, that is one strange site!  You really pick them!  LOL  Yeah alot like what I was thinking the more I was searching.

I was thinking it was along the lines of this one Mart....the piece would bolt to the roller and adjust up/down depending on the height of the meat to the floor (There are restrictions on that believe it or not in industrial applications).

Yes it is strange !!  But I was in a hurry and had to take what I could find quickly !!  Thats it KC !! Pull down and the meat could be turned for inspection !!  These may be missing the rollers !! Or could have been a different design !!

As for the value?  Well, unless you know a little upstart for meat or someone who does their own butchering...not much.

I would at least try for $10 - $12 each.

Thats about what I had in mind too !!  However if you sell on ebay,, could go higher !!   I can see hunters needing something like these !!  Great for field dressing deer ect !!

LOLOL Greenacres.

I was thinking selling from the home and agree with Mart that they would probably sell higher elsewhere.

Might try Craigslist first,, gear your ad toward hunters and price them at $25. ea !! Always ask more because they will sure want to haggle about price !! Then knock $5. off ,,, they think they get a good deal and you are way ahead !!
