Title: kitchen and bric a brac...
Post by: bigwull on February 16, 2013, 07:47:12 AM
Hi,all  i realise that some of you have missed me,whilst there will be others who..thought..thank Christ..he,s gone...well, to those "few"..i,m back...but..it will be sporadically..as we have moved into a new house...well, old house...but new to us...and there is a multitude of things to be done...and i,m the plumber, joiner, decorator, and cook,...so i, have a lot on my plate..so to speak....Its a terraced cottage...in Brechin..and it needed a total re-wire. re-plumb, some structural work, total re-decoration,...total everything,...but well, get there,...there was No kitchen when we moved in...but i got what you see on ebay...and the worktops are the beez kneez...they are American Cedar...I got them from my local sawmill, they came in an unfinished state, and i machined them, then sanded them..3 days, and they,ve had 10 coats of varnish...and they are not finished yet...it takes time...there is still a fair bit to do...but..Avril is very happy with what i,ve done so far
Now to some items that i got at an auction last week,..it was a job lot of what we call bric a brac..i paid £12..for approx 30 pieces...some went straight to the charity shop..whilst the others we have kept,..here are some pics of what i deem to be the pick of the bunch...there is a Biscuit jar,..made in Italy...it has Dip a Mano  Deruta..on the base,...the plates have Lawleys Stoke,..the Cavalier..is an advertisement, for Mcewans ale....but for me it has to be the "wooden tray"...its made of solid wood, type as yet unknown, its 23in long x 15in wide x 1.1/2in thick...it has Mother of Pearl & Abalone shell inlay the centre grating lifts off..it has 2 other features which i will speak about later...your opinions will be much appreciated..i,ll have to load the pics in 2,s..as i think they may be too big..and as i,m not too clever when it comes to re-sizing...i,ll never get there,...I,m having a problem uploading the pics..therefore, i,m going to send them to another member who, will hopefully have more luck than I....

I have had the pictures problem of resizing here myself--if you click on your picture and right click a resize button should be on your upper left...you can take it from there but I reduce to 50% and I can get three pics up

Sorry...what for...you did it and thats what counts....you helped an old codger like me...in a time of need....now what do you think that tray...is...or more to the point...what is real purpose...if you look closely at the main pic with the lattice cover off..you will see a little metal cover...then on the side you will see a metal tube....this is real wood..and weighs approx 6.5 kg....

You get a box of these!!...you got it in one J....Sapphire....ne arly.... ;D..thats exactly what it is..its a Chinese steam platter...i paid £2 for this...and i,m now searching for the little kettle that sits on a spirit burner,,,a rubber tube gets attached to the pipe at the side and the steam comes through the lattice..grill to steam little fishes etc...

Yes they are...the nominal height for kitchen units over here is 870mm then there is a 38mm worktop..the legs can be lowered..for short arses...these worktops are 50mm thick..thats why the stove is sitting low...but tomorrow i,m going to build a plinth..and sit it on that so that the burners are higher than the worktop...this was the kitchen that i got on ebay...the total cost inc the worktops..& stove..is only.£502...

Right click on your mouse and see if it say "resize". That's it works on my program over the picture, but you can check all pictures and it will do it all it once . Hit save and resize.

..High gear!...I,ve been stuck in high gear since the the day we first got the keys of this house...we only had 6 weeks...to try and make it habitable...before we had to move in...i had to rip out 6 x joists from the front room..as they had dry rot...then there was the total re-wire, the plumbing...the kitchen...Avril!!.....i,ve been eating, sleeping, this house...and i,m loving it...so don,t you worry yourself about my patience levels...i,ve got the patience of a Saint.... ;D

How do I reduce the size of my pics..they are all over 5.1 mb..thats why i can,t upload them...

bigwull, click on "FILE" ..... then click "SAVE A COPY" .....  and then click "standard e-mail view" ...... and it will put the "copy" in your E-mail folder .... and then upload that copy to the forum.

Now I viewed your pictures on photobucket. And they can be uploaded to the forum from there by this process:

1. select a picture.
2. on the right of screen will be a tab "direct links", click it
3. click "direct url link" .... and it will auto  "copy" the link.
4. then go to the forum message box and "paste" the link there.
5. then "highlight" the link and "click" the Insert image tab that is underneath the "italics" tab

Now I managed to get the 1st picture's url but none of the others. here it is:

(http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t98/geeziesmom/Wullie%20and%20Avril%20s%20new%20kitchen/Picture332_zpsbbef3d2a.jpg]http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t98/geeziesmom/Wullie%20and%20Avril%20s%20new%20kitchen/Picture332_zpsbbef3d2a.jpg)

If you can copy all the urls for those pictures then you can paste them in the same post.

Oops that was close ??? ??? ???

Ah yes, "fiddle about" with Uncle Ernie/Old Keith Moon. Watch out for Cousin Kevin!

Nice fiddling about with that wee bit of kitchen as well. The counter tops are the best! Must be yank planks...:)

American Cedar...nothing like it....when I went to the sawmill 6 weeks ago...It was just to enquire about..if they had any sizeable planks that i could use as a worktop....The foreman took me into a big shed and pointed to this massive plank..that was all of 13ft long by 3ft wide and 4in thick...he told me it had been there for nigh on 6 years..it was straight and flat...he told me they could cut it down the middle...and cut it to size...all i,d have to do would be to fine machine it and sand it down and seal it...I asked "how much"..he took out a calculator and started punching buttons...I asked him if I would need a seat...when he gave me the price...he said, No....we,ll just throw a mattress on the floor when you fall"...after a minute or two...he said .."how does £240 cut and delivered sound".....i said...great...and they were good to there word...after i got home..i went online to check what other wood suppliers were charging..and..the same figures came up time after time...which was £27 per cubic foot...and there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard..which comes to £729 + 20% vat + deliver...so got a really good bargain....

As our kitchen is,nt the biggest,we did,nt have enough room for a kitchen table, but as there are only the two of us,I found this on ebay...its a pull out table,it sits behind a 600mm drawer front,..and extends out to 800mm = 31.1/2in the rear part of it is slatted so that when it is pushed in it folds down the back of the unit...I saw them listed at anything up to £200...but got this one..new in the box for £25 + £8 postage...and as you can see...it fits in nicely...The floor has been covered with oak laminate...now all I,ve got to do is the Tiling on the back wall

Update...the cast iron insert and Mahogany surround have been fitted...I took near 1/2 a ton of rubble out of that wall, where the old tiled fireplace sat...I,ve fitted the living flame gas fire, and had the whole installation checked over by a Corgi registered gas engineer...as you can see it looks the dogs bollocks,Avril is really happy with it,....Now you, know Sapphire..what i was doing during the night... ;D..today i,ll give it a really good clean,as this pic was taken immediately after i fired it up...and as much as i,d thought i,d gotten rid of the dust...as you can see i did,nt....maybe it needs a woman,s touch.... ;D
