Title: Need help determining what this is....

A buddy of mine found this while walking in the woods in Northern Illinois about 25 years ago.  It measures 7" x 4 1/2" and weighs about a pound.  Does anybody have any idea what this is?

looks like an old trivet to me...that would have been attached to a range....

Actually, it's the valve trigger for a Starline Cattle Drinking Fountain.

(Now...you didn't think I was that smart all by myself did you? ;D)

Could have fooled me and I live in cattle country !!  But we have ponds and creeks they can drink from !!
