Mark looks like Wood & Son, I'm pretty sure that was their pattern.  I don't have my Godden's handy at the moment.  I will check later. GG

Semi china is also known as Ironstone...as its heavier than normal porcelain...what you,ve got is most likely from Staffordshire...It might be Rileys...or Ridgeways...Riles did transfer printed dishes in the late 19th century...looking at some of there stuff..prices range from £10 then up up it goes...but until we tie down whose mark it is..this is only speculation...

Thanks Bigwull, Ipcress & gg27 for your notes. The only reference I can find anywhere to these markings or this pattern is this Minton drainer. Do you have any idea if many potteries used the same pattern or is it now most likely that it is a minton??

warmest regards

I've catalogued stuff like this before and it's generally accepted as Minton from the George IV / William IV period. They were a few stages of transition back then before they established themselves with more artistic pieces and date codes etc

Millers Antiques Guide also attributes it to Minton.

The " English Scenery " plate there appears in a book on Minton.

Glad it was found.  I knew it looked familiar but gave a guess, which was wrong.  Wasn't the first time & won't be the last time!  :P

Why Not....just because its Minton..does,nt mean you, need to stop  eating cheese...unless of course you,re hash/bash merchant...with vandals that masquerade as children....then by all means...lock it away in a cupboard somewhere...then after you,ve popped your clogs your relatives can find it and sell it...BTW...not all Minton pieces are worth oodles of ££ ;D

Now if it was one of these Minton cheese stands...then I could understand your reluctance for using it...these change hands for up to £1300+...but the blue & white semi china ones they can sell for as little as £30...

Worth more than £30 but not the best pattern. I'd be selling as i don't like that willow style blue and white.

Just as a point of interest, that cheese dish is one of the most faked ones out there.  Don't ask how I know. :-[
