I recently purchased what appears to be a painting on rice paper. I know absolutely nothing about these. (I didn't pay much for it) What is throwing me for a loop is the rice paper appears to be in strips. I have never seen that before. If anyone has any info on this I would greatly appreciate it. If you need anymore pictures just let me know I will gladly take more. (http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd66/defchino23/004.jpg)

How wide are the strips,...could be, the pieces you have are from a strip of wall paper...or what is more likely, they have come from a Chinese screen...
-
I( see what looks like fold lines !! What may have happened is that this was rolled as it should have been and put in a tube for storage !! Then something heavy was put on top that smashed the tube !! That would make those regular lines you are seeing and it would look like narrow strips !! It would not have been painted in small strips !! Is the piece in two halves ?? They look to have been taken out of a frame !!
-
as for being painted on narrow strips..this method is very conceivable as the Chinese did it all the time...my link may help..

Thanks for the info you all are awesome. When I first saw this I thought they were fold lines and it could of been an old fan that was flattened out. But after looking closer I noticed where there was painting there were no folds.

I may have to start calling you Miss Marple...LOL!!

I did notice that,, but the folds were also much lighter there !! If it were in strips there would be seams !! Did you find any overlapping edges anywhere ?? Or is it on a backing ?? What would be the point of making it in strips, just to paint two pretty ordinary birds on a limb !! They had larger pieces !! I didn`t see a signature, or mark anywhere !!
-
if you look at my link..the scrolls are in effect strips..
-
You are missing the point Wullie !! Why would someone go to that much trouble ?? The artwork is nothing to brag about !! Its like many others !! I would think they were smarter than that !! And I am not talking about ancient scrolls which were not on this kind of rice paper !! More likely vellum !! And the strips are running wrong !! This would have to have been displayed sideways !! Not easy to display like that !!
-
With that name on the back it could have been made for a decorator.
-
Not folds, this happens with many types of paper stock.
Though i would question if this had been painted on the Orient
-
i,m not saying ancient scrolls either...i was using them as a guide..i still think they may have come from a screen...or might be wallpaper
-
And the strips are running wrong !!
That depends on which way I look at the pictures, to wit:
;D ;D

Years ago when I was in S Korea you would see stores selling artwork like this...strips that were painted. Most were used for decorating. But surprisingly enough. However, they prided themselves in wrapping high item purchases in pieces like this - which made the purchase all that more grand!
I know I was shocked when I bought several Celadon pieces they were all wrapped in fancy handmade papers and/or painted strips! Still have them because they are so unusual compared to the plastic bags or handled paper bags we get here!
-
I don`t see any seams in this one KC !! Can you post a pic of yours so we can compare them ?? Why the strips ?? Very time consuming just to use for wrapping paper !! Hubby spent few years in S. Korea on K-MAG with Army !! I have not seen anything like that used in this manner !! Not that he would have went shopping !!
