I am trying to get this up as a first post and see how I do !
Looking for any info (age, wood, value etc) on a set of pub chairs.
Have makers mark/stamp on back of seat H.S, I looked for a database but didnt find one.
-
It's Deja vu all over again!
Need more pictures and a description of the mark you found.
-
Will do in a bit now that I know how to size and post...The mark is obvious of course but in regard to the other photos what would be of use ?
-
Need pics of underside and closeups of construction! Otherwise we can only agree it is a chair!
It helps in determining age, craftsmanship, the answer to your questions.....
-
Also would help to know your location and how these chairs came to be yours !!

Low back Windsor chair or smokers bow. I can't tell the age but they were factory made and used in hotels, restaurants and lodges in the 19th century. The seat construction is not clear but I think I see a place where two boards join. The simplicity makes me think they were machine made for commercial use in the later part of the century. Do not hold me to that as I really need to see the pictures requested.
-
its not a low back Windsor...it is in fact a Smokers Chair....see my link.....

ghopper I've had that issue! ;D ;D That darn spell check!

They are essentially the same chair !! No matter what its called in a given area !! These were reproduced in great numbers during the 60`s !! Grandmother had a set,, mother had a similar set !! Same chair just minor changes in turnings !! This one may be older but can`t tell til we see additional pics !! Appears to have had dowel holes in top of arms that do not line up with supports !!

Sorry it took me a bit to get these and get back. I was in a rush and didnt post in the Intro section but the brief rundown is that these and the other items I need to ID are my parents and it has fallen to me to thin things out since they are downsizing.
I do not know exactly where they came from, probably a local dealer in the 70s,possibly an auction. They were used as regular chairs at the house. They are HEAVY suckers and not suited for future use.
I live right outside Washington DC.
I will post all the new pics following, this one is the front.

Last but not least the makers mark which is an upside down H.S. on the back of the seat...sorry it is a bit fuzzy...
Even without the pics just the name smokers chair brought up alot more relevent pics and info...
So before I get more info I am going to guess and put it here for posterity (or posteriority if I am wrong:) ).
I think they are like 1890-1910,manufactered but perhaps hand asembled, English...Not sure on wood, my father was good at that but not me...
-
Wood is most likely Oak,..from the design and coupled with the metal support...I,d say late 1800,s..its definitely a smokers chair see my link..on my last post...Windsor chairs were similar...but,i,d bet my boots on this being a smokers, over here in UK,especially in parts of England...single chairs such as this do extremely well...and having looked at it in detail...it has a charm about it....that had i found it...it would not find its way into my hungry woodburner...but would enjoy supporting my rather large arse..... ;D...
-
Oak is right. I'd find some way to hold on to this.
-
It doesn't look like oak to me. ::) ::)

-
Looks like birch !!
Na...this was a Birch....
A birch rod (often shortened to "birch") is a bundle of leafless twigs bound together to form an implement for administering corporal punishment.
Contrary to what the name suggests, a birch rod is not a single rod and is not necessarily made from birch twigs, but can also be made from various other strong and smooth branches of trees or shrubs, such as willow.[1] A hazel rod is particularly painful; a bundle of four or five hazel twigs was used in the 1960s and 1970s on the Isle of Man, the last jurisdiction in Europe to use birching as a judicial penalty

I think it is....WOOD!!!!!! At least we all agree that it is wood...not a composite.
Wow, our discussions are getting crazy here lately! :) Spring fever??????
My two cents....late 1800's. NICE PIECE. Although heavy...that is a good thing...they don't make them that way anymore. IT WILL LAST LONGER THAN YOU!!!! This is one that can prop a door open with no problem!!!
