Title: Antique Silver Pen?
Post by: GoodwillSCIA on March 15, 2013, 02:37:14 PM
I work for Goodwill and we get all kinds of unusual things donated.  I have done some searching and cannot find anything about this.  I'm not even really sure what it is.  It looks kind of like a pen.  There is a hold in the top that looks like it might be for filling with ink.  There is another small hole near the bottom, but there is no hole right on or near the tip.  Does anyone have any thoughts?

Interesting item !!  Does the tip pull out so it can be changed ??  One of our members also works for Goodwill Ind !! Not sure but I think he is around Chicago or outskirts !! He is excellent on silver items !! Your item may be an early calligraphy type pen where your finger over that hole controls the flow of ink !! Have you tried some colored water in it to see ?? Just hold your finger over the hole toward the tip to fill !!

Yeah, Ironlord could be a help here. Unfortunately, I haven't seen him on the boards for awhile.

I tried putting water in the top and it didn't go through to the bottom hole.  Now I'm really confused on what this is!

looking at that clip on it, makes me think think this is a flower holder, like a small posey, that you would wear at a wedding....

Since we now know it holds water,  that doesn't seem unreasonable.

Well I wouldn`t have thought about that,, but at least that experiment with the water helped find what it really was !!

Neat piece !!  Look for marks that may say if its silver plate or sterling !!

I already gave you some karmic applause a couple of days ago,  in anticipation of this.

Yes,  I can read the future once in awhile. It's a gift.... ;)

Wow, that very well might be what it is!  The only thing is, the opening is only about 3mm wide and 2 inches deep.

Another doubtful Dinah...What do you mean,"that might be what it is "..3mm opening at the business end..is one stem of a flower, 2in long...is enough to hold the flower..unless of course you want a bunch of them.....here,s one here 55mm long..to hold one stem...

Also, some pewter / plated items marked Rio are from Holland, so this could be Dutch.
