hi everyone, i picked this up at a auction yesterday. i thought it was unusual so i bought it. paid $40. they called it a antique reverse painting on glass. i know nothing about it. there are 3 letters on top and a symbol of some kind on bottom. has anyone seen one of these before and have any info. i dont care about value. if i like a item then its worth it to me, would just like to find out some information on it. thank you for any ideas
i left out that its hard to see picture clear unless held up to light

I'm thinking it's from the Holy Name Society.

-
This is my line of thinking also..as the symbol on the bottom left/right is an orthodox symbol...this has the look of an icon
-
We looked that up on the link you provided. That is definitely their symbol! Thanks for that information. I am still wondering what time period this may have come from, if it is rare or if there are many out there. I am thinking I may see if we can contact them.
-
Hey everyone, this is getting very interesting. we emailed the Holy Name Society and sent these same pics. We were contacted by a Bishop that let us know he forwarded it to the President of the Society. within a hour we received a email from the president. He told us that the picture is of Jesus when he was 12 to 14 years old. He also wants to know what we intend to do with it and that he was going to forward this to his fellow national holy name officers and get back with us. I think i might have finally found a good piece!!! will let you know what happens
-
Interesting !!! Let us know when you hear from them !!
-
Exciting! Let us know what you find out.
-
That's fantastic! Can't wait to hear what happens. I would also be curious to know if this was a church window or if it had some other function.
-
That looks like it might have been made-for or salvaged out of a leaded-glass window.
-
That's what I was figuring as well cogar. Will be interesting....
-
I don`t think so !! Its a plate !! Same image is on HNS buttons,, at least it looked like the same image !!
-
its not a plate, too fragile....unless its made from 6mm plate,or toughened glass,...
-
First post says its a plate ?? And the HNS knew about it was in a later post !! A stained glass window would not be likely, since it is reverse painted !! Could not have put the painted part inside !! And unless it was covered on the outside it would not have lasted long when exposed to weather !! Especially N Eastern weather !! And it appears to be in pretty good condition !!

First post says its a plate??....show me......
1st post...

Well now Mart, you are more trusting than I am about auctioneers actually knowing what they are selling.
Auctionaddiction stated in the 1st post, to wit:
they called it a antique reverse painting on glass. i know nothing about it.
It looks the same to me, front or back, which makes me think it is in the glass, not on it.
I think that is a "sleeper" ..... and the reason the Bishop got so excited about it.
-
Could be Cogar !! Might be encased but can`t look at it to tell so have to take someones word for it !!
-
can you take a pic of the edge of the glass..in order that it can be determined if this is two pieces of glass, stuck together,
-
bigwull, here's some pictures of the edge of the glass. It looks like one piece to us. You can see where there is an area of small chips around the edge. I also included another photo of the piece out in the sunlight. Thank you for the replies.

One piece of glass it is then....nowt encased between.....
-
Doe the front and the back feel the same !! If reverse painted you can feel the paint, it will be different rougher and more dull than the glass front !! If both feel the same and all you can feel is the glass, then the pic is encased within the glass !! Looking at the edge,, it very likely did,, as others said, come from a window !!

Seems the HNS donated a lot of stained glass windows !! This is the technique for yours I think !! Bottom look at The Good Shephard !! It was donated by HNS !! I couldn`t get it to come up so I didn`t get to see last few !! Would be nice if this was made by the same company as these,, and its possible !! They had a NY office but all stained glass was made in Germany and shipped here !!

In the 16th century a range of glass stains were introduced, most of them coloured by ground glass particles. They were a form of enamel. Painting on glass with these stains was initially used for small heraldic designs and other details. By the 17th century a style of stained glass had evolved that was no longer dependent upon the skilful cutting of coloured glass into sections. Scenes were painted onto glass panels of square format, like tiles. The colours were then annealed to the glass before the pieces were assembled. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stained_glass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stained_glass)

The above were made late 1800`s through early 1900`s !! This one possibly from that time period !! Still trying to find it ,, they gave stained glass windows to several religious groups/churches !!
