it is marked: gorham sterling 384,so is it a real sterling silver or silver plated ?

You've got the real deal there......sterling . The 384 would be a model/pattern No.

yes ..as Sapphire says..the real deal, and depending on design and weight..could be worth a fair bit..see ebay link
