I was hoping someone could give me some information on this brass gong I found. I put all the tags I could think of when searching and got nothing that would help me.
it's about 10.5" high 8" wide and weighs 3.9 lbs
I hope the pictures help
Thanks, meanwhile I'll keep looking

Did you try Brass Dinner Gong?....because this is what this is...there are dozens of them on ebay, with the average asking price between £10 /£20....one here slightly larger than yours, with a round base,

I did do "gong" on ebay and I got gongs but nothing very descriptive.
The problem with ebay is the seller usually uses the title as the description. If it's title is "Old Gong" they is usually don't add much more than that...well they might add "charming old gong, nice ring" ;)
I'm more interested in the mark , who might have made it and when
I do appreciate your looking Thanks bw

I,m a Pink F and King C man myself...oh..and i enjoy living in the past...music wise... ;D...i was 19 in 1969...just made it by the skin of my teeth...
-
Ur a bit older than me...I saw K C during the C of the CK era. You must remember The Fillmore east in NYC? It was a great venue for music..just large enough for the acoustic but small enough to be an intimate setting. I saw Procal Harem there ..down the block was Hendrix Lady Land studios.
Sigh.....I sound old but music suxs now...last time I bought anything on Itunes it was Nirvana and the Ramones
We thank you for the great bands u gave us.
Now, back to the "dinner gong". My daughter (25) would sleep all day if I let her. I went to her door at 7am and gonged the crap out of the thing..got her right up
Here in the US we don't call anyone to meals with a bell or gong, we just yell at the top of our lungs to get your ass to the table.....it works
Just found out gong from "William Tonks and Sons"
-
We did the same over here..."in my house when i was with my first wife...and having 5 sprogs...it was a case of shouting loudly...."yer dinners ready"....and if you don,t hurry up....the dog will be eating it....they never missed their dinner..

"Then when
You're asleep and
You're dreaming
Your telepathic powers
Who knows
Why the wind blows
Through this window
Do you believe in me?
We believe in you!"

....What's that in the sky now?
Teapots that can fly now
Voices in your head
Tell me what they said
-
"Banana Nirvana Manana"
-
Do not watch when if you have partaken M.A.D,s.... ;D....you,d be amazed at what you can see flying when you,ve got the M.A.D,s in you bloodstream....

Good opportunity though to talk a bit about old american furniture.
"A HALF CENTURY AGO (1949), Joseph Downs, the legendary curator of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, told scholars and collectors attending the first Williamsburg Antiques Forum in Virginia that as far as American furniture was concerned, little of artistic merit was made south of Baltimore."
BAM!!! It was on like a neck bone as they say in the american south land. That was a very odd
thing to say ( considering the forum he was speaking at was in Williamsburg Virginia). Frank Horton, a legendary collector, decided to open a museum with a focus on southern material culture. Frank had friends, very wealthy friends like the RJ Reynolds tobacco family type friends. In 1965, Frank opened MESDA and the rest as they say, is history.

My Woodburner...can,t tell the difference.....N.S. E.W...its all the same....if i get it cheap enough...its, like the Cheech & Chong ..movie....up in smoke.....and the latest piece..although not American...was an 8ft Ercol dining table... ;D
-
The South does have some merit !! Thanks Jacon4 !!
Well Wullie,, at least you are not burning our furniture !! We southerners might take offense if you did !! Although I hate to see yours go up in smoke too !!

I,d rather be warm, than sit freezing my b****..off,....do you remember the story i told about Avril,s Auntie...burning the Ben Hogan gifted set of Hickory shafted golf clubs,...had they not been burned they,d be worth $$$$+ today....but in the winter of 47...they served a purpose,...they along with other pieces of furniture..helped keep a family warm....Now where,s my axe.....

I thought of you today when I caught a few minutes of the BBC Roadshow. A lady was there with a Georgian dining room table that her husband had found in a skip. She was thrilled to hear that it was valued at 25,000 Pd's. (Is furniture like coal...can you get more heat out the higher priced variety?) :D
-
Yes it does...both ways, cheap coal, = fast burning, quick heat.....expensive coal, slower burning longer heat....the same goes with furniture...cheap end product, i.e. pine, ply, composite,...burns quick, instant heat,.....whereas oak, and most of the hardwoods, give good prolonged heat,.....but there all the same to me...fuel, but only if they are cheap enough.... ;D

Sometimes, they,re better off, not knowing the true value,...cos,when they do get told do, their whole attitude changes,...from someone who enjoyed what they had,..to the person who becomes paranoid...if anyone goes near it,...I know someone, who, on being told that the 5 little "yellowing plastic Japanese figures"..that gave so much joy to her sprogs, and her grandsprogs, were in fact, 15th century Netsukes...that were worth in the region of £20,000....these same figures are now in a safe,...locked away, out of site, enjoyed by no one,.and their owner is paranoid, ..

The South does have some merit !!
Mart, yeah it does. What Downs did was basically get caught being a snob which is VERY COMMON in the art/decorative art world. Indeed, a generation before that comment there was not a SINGLE PIECE of american furniture in ANY american museum because it was thought inferior to european furniture.
It wasn't until Mrs Russell Sage purchased the Bolles furniture collection in 1909 and donated it to the MET where ol' Joseph was able to build and then open the American Wing in 1929. This marked the FIRST exhibition of "inferior" American furniture by any museum in the nation. The Bolles collection remains to this day as the core of the American Wing's furniture collection.
