Title: Help Identifying Patriotic Cloth Tapestry(?)
Post by: TC12 on April 23, 2013, 12:39:07 PM
Hello,

Does anyone know what this piece might be? I referred to it as a tapestry for lack of a better word. It measures 31" x 31". I have tried to learn more about the image that is sewn into this, but have had no luck identifying it. I can't even place the second flag on it. I thought this was an interesting piece, so I decided to pick it up when I saw it. If anyone has any information about what its significance might be and if it has any value, I'd appreciate it. Thanks as always!

Tony

I have a feeling that this other flag is French..not the flag of France, more of a Regimental Pennant.....as they were allied to the Americans during the War of Independance...havi ng done a bit more searching...it could be a Swedish, flag,as Swedes were involved, on the Contenental army,s side as was Gen Von Steuban..from Prussia,...I know i,m knocking on the door...but...its finding the right door...thats eluding me...maybe when the big arsed book man comes along..he,ll know...he knows everything else...so i see no reason why he won,t know this.... ;D

Haha. Thanks for sharing the possibilities. I, too, thought maybe the other flag could have been Swedish at first, but I still couldn't get anywhere with that. I appreciate the background info!

Doesn't look like the Swedish flag and the Stars and Stripes number 16, later than the war of independance and earlier than the civil war

As there was only 13 States at the start of the War of Independance,...therefore there would only be 13 stars, so Ippy is correct on one fact...but still can,t count...either that..or i,m needing Mart,s $2 specials.... ;D

War of 1812?
could well be, but it still does,nt account for 17 stars, not even 16...as there was only 15...from 1778 to 1818...

Isn't that the national flag of Sweden on the right?

I'm not sure whether this would help at all, but here is a close up picture of just the stars. I was also wondering if there might be more stars than actually visible. That star in the middle seems like it could be a few stars that look clustered together due to the way the flag is draped. And it doesn't seem the stars form a specific pattern either. Then again, I know nothing about what's being shown so I could be totally wrong.

Nope. The white sections of the flag are strange.

I've done a flag search and found nothing

Sweden is the obvious answer, but...like Ippy says its the white flashes that are confusing...

I'm not sure if these would help much either, but I thought I'd take a couple closer pictures of the non American flag and the eagle shield. Maybe you'll all be able to notice something by getting a better look...

I think this is for a fraternal organization !! Everything is symbolic !! There was no flower in the American Flag that I am aware of !!  Yet there is in this one !!  It isn`t that old and likely is on a cotton twill fabric !! Appears to be done on an older style (60`s or so) embroidery machine !!

Sure looks like embroidery to me too , from what I can see .....  one (1) six-point star & those flowers are a clue , I'd say ....

perhaps a F.O.E. (American/Scandie) airie related item .... ?

We rented a building to a lady that had an embroidery machine and did work for many companies and groups !!  I have seen a lot of that type work !!  Had her do a few western shirts for me !!
