Title: Old pitcher/vase? No makers mark, found at Goodwill.
Post by: alwestf22 on May 15, 2013, 02:08:18 PM
Hello all! I am new to the forum, and I am hoping I can get some help on this one.

This is a recent find of mine at Goodwill. Thin porcelain, hand pained. Odd design at the neck, almost like a lattice cut? It is shaped like a pitcher, but if you used it as such, the liquid would fall through the cutouts, so I'm thinking maybe a vase? Not makers mark, just a 194 imprinted before the shiny glaze on the bottom. the inside is also shiny, but the outside is matte. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

It looks like petals with gold flecks maybe? I took a close up, and it goes around the entire bottom.

Figured I better not make an assumption !! So darn sleepy right now wouldn`t trust my eyes even with cheaters !!

I think your pitcher is just a vase probably from 1940 or so !!  The number on bottom indicates that it was a mass produced item !!  The number is a style or pattern number and with no makers name  or label could be any one of many !!  And its possible that its an import piece !!  Just no way to know !!  Only one I found with an openwork neck was by Galle` and  it is not one of theirs !! The cloisonné added makes me think Italian import !!

Vase or decorative purposes only...with the cut outs on the neck!!!

The handle is quite odd as well, it seems the gold just ends, not like it has been rubbed off or something. I tried pouring from it...doesn't make a nice spray, just runs out and joins the water from the spout.
