Title: Yard Sale Table Quiz
Post by: frogpatch on May 24, 2013, 12:20:42 PM
I thought I would do something a little different. I bought this parlor table at the a fund raiser sale for a local historical site. It was 20.00. It has a paper label that was partially missing. After some research I know everything that I need to know about it. When I bought it I knew nothing about it. I will tell you that it was made by GH Bear in Allentown PA. The company burned down in 1898 and was rebuilt at another location in 1901 approximately. It operated until the mid 20th century as far as I could tell. What year do you think this table was made?. It is solid mahogany. Has an applique border around the skirt. The top is made of several boards and is not veneered. It is in original condition untouched by anyone but me who cleaned up the top a little leaving all the scratches in the finish. Also does it have any value in a non parlor world beyond the twenty bucks? I actually know the exact year it was made but I guessed wrong when I bought it. I am offering as a prize to the winner a catfish dinner at Marts place. If Mart wins it becomes dinner at the Jersey Shore. Transportation not included.

Yeah, i would say $100-200 bucks is about right on the east coast, a bit more if refinished.

Oh my !! Guess I need to get busy and start fishing !!   Does it have to be the exact year ??

My estimate would be 1908 since everyone is picking an exact year,, that sounds like a good one !!  Unfortunately,, $100. here too if in good condition !!

I'm going to guess later than others here.  1918.... not much value in my area at the moment, maybe $85-$100.  GG

I wish you all were buyers. I would have sold it. I will give it a little longer but gg27 is the closest so far.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend. Remember to pray for our troops and thank a veteran. Buy a poppy too.

The weather sucks here this weekend but the bars and boardwalks are opened at the shore, post Sandy. I think I'll go try my luck on the crane machine then go have a beer. My way of helping the local economy restart. Cheers

Well, my first choice would have been somewhere in the teens but no one ever picks the single digits so I am going to hold there and not take a second stab since I am chief cook and bottle washer here !!  If the fish don`t bite will good Texas comfort food work as well ???  Southern fried chicken, cream gravy with biscuits, home grown mashed potatoes,,red or white,,I have both,, corn on cob,,sliced fresh tomatoes !!  Hope no one is on a diet but if you are I can cook for that too,, all fresh from the garden !!
Pics are from last year,, tomatoes will be ready soon for this year !!

Avril has one of these, and can have a crop,of cherry tomatoes, every 30 days...its all done by remote, she just puts in the seed pods, fills it with water, and a little sachet of nutrients, sets the programmer, for 16 hours of sunshine and 8 darkness, and after 30 days she has a full crop of juicy cherry toms

well there,s 12 teeny weeny plants in there..and it produces around 2.5kg of cherry toms per month,at a cost of around $5...which is more than enough for us...we also grow kumquats...there deeelicious...the last crop, of them...which weighed around the same as the cherry toms...i scoffed them in 2 days....suffice to say...i had no trouble with my bowel movements.... ;D

A friend on my garden group sent me Kumquat seeds !!  They are now 6 inches tall !!  Those things are the pits to germinate !! Takes about 2 or 3 months !! But they were dry seed,, I think they are easier/faster if fresh !!

once you get these kumquats up to about a foot or so high, they should give you a good crop, they flower around 2/3 times a year, and fruit the same,...cutting back makes them grow quicker, but restricts them flowering...more often...
