Title: Found pottery shard
Post by: KristenAnn on June 08, 2013, 04:29:29 PM
My uncle found this in the Cooper River in Charleston, South Carolina and my grandmother has asked me to research it for her. Any information would be appreciated!

If this forum isn't the appropriate place to ask about this sort of piece, please let me know and I will remove the post.

Oh No !!  You are fine and in the proper forum !!  Can I ask the size approx ??  Just measure the height as best you can and the circumference at widest part !!

Thanks for the reassurance, and absolutely! I only have a metal tape measure so nothing I can really wrap around it, but it's 3 1/4 inches across at its widest part and is about 4 inches tall. The material is about half an inch thick.

I'd say a reproduction Greek amphora vase.

Had you said,he found it whilst swimmimg off the coast of some Greek island....then ....maybe we,d all be saying something different...but as it stands...i agree with Ip....

Thanks, Ipcress and bigwull! Definitely looks like an amphora, and I figured we were dealing with a reproduction rather than some ancient Greek pottery, haha. We're curious about how old it is. I'm assuming that would difficult to pin down, though; it could easily be part of a very modern piece that was made to look a lot older than it is.

Most likely is as they say !! Could be mid century or before !!  At that size may have held olive oil or similar !! Perhaps brought back from a trip !!~
