Title: Two Weekend Whatsits
Post by: frogpatch on June 17, 2013, 02:57:45 PM
Hi Everyone. This weekend my wife and I drove to the Allenwood General store which is a combination of a laid back eatery with an antique store/pickers paradise blended together. You can sit in mismatched old chairs and tables and have a very reasonably priced and well prepared breakfast or lunch with patrons that arrive by car, or by bicycle as the store sit at the end of the bike trail that runs ten miles from the beach town of Manasquan. Most people on their way from the Garden State Parkway to the beaches do not even know that the remnants of this sleepy little historic village exists a couple miles of off Rte 34.
We arrived at the "clean out for renovation sale" on the second day and greeted by piles of everything. There were no less than 12 wooden carpet sweepers. There was stuff inside and outside ranging from great country furniture to those things that might have been better left at the curb. There was something for everyone

I was talking with the owner and telling him I was going to post this one item on the site as a whatsit and he pulled out another. So here they are.

If you look at the row of stuff in one picture you will see a whitish item, that has a crank handle. It is all wood except for the handle and it measures 32 inches long at the base and 14 inches high. I bought it so I can post a better picture if you want. I know what it is because I had one before and someone told me.

The other item is this thing that is standing alone. It has a foot pedal that operates a clamping device that only opens and closes about an inch or so. It is made to operate standing up. The owner told me what he was told it is. I had no clue. Mart probably has one that she still uses.

If you are ever exit the GS Parkway at exit 98 and are heading towards Point Pleasant take the first right before the Lukoil Station and check out the Allenwood General Store. You can get a breakfast sandwich for 3.00 and maybe find a bargain too. You can also avoid all the traffic to the beach on RT 34 if someone at the store will tell you. I would but its a hanging offense in these parts.

Bigwull,
I only photographed the stuff on the lot. The good stuff was mostly inside. There was a wainscot cabinet inside with H hinges that had the original green paint which was only marked $225.00  It was only eight inches deep, yet 7 feet tall and about 48 inches wide. I know I could have bought it for 150.00. I just don't have the room.

Mart, I am sorry but I took that photo with my cell phone in bad light while I was speaking with the proprietor. My hands are not as still as I like them sometimes. Here is a picture of the thing that I bought for 8.00. It had a price tag of 7.00 from years ago. First time I ever talked someone up. The little screw eye and where I live might help you. Sorry but even this one is a bit fuzzy.

Bigwull,

WTF? Your next one WTF?  You must be hanging out with Nancy again. Its OK we can share her. People in the U.S. have no idea what I am saying but I know you do.

Mart, There is a little less than 3 inches between the slats. I will give you another clue.  Nothing ever went inside it. Although I may turn it vertical and make light fixture out of it. My wife will really like that idea. No. But think about it. I think it would look .....different. If I bought it, it must have to do with something I am interested in like cooking, or fishing, or buying old stuff to give to the thrift store. Not the third and it is not for drying pasta, although that is not a bad idea.

Greenacres, the forum topic list showed you had the last post at 11:57 last night but there is no post on the forum. At least not one that I can see. The last post I saw form you was referring to a box stapler. That is a good guess. It is basically just a table with a clamp for holding a thin item upright.

KC you are as close as anyone is going to get. It is a fishing line drier. In the old days fishing line was basically just string. After fishing in salt water it had to be removed from the reel, washed in fresh water and dried. Reels did not hold 300 yards of line like they do today. The little eye is for tying the end before you crank. It displays well with the hold wood fishing pole a posted a while back a wooden gaff and an old lure which I found last week. I might dry pappardelle or tagliatelle on it.

The other thing I am told is a saw blade sharpening bench. You place the blade in the clamp, step down on the peddle so it does not move and then take a file to the teeth. It does not appear that you can do a a double bucking aw on there just a bow saw or hand saw blade. It could also hold a circular saw blade well too. I would have sworn that Mart has one of those.

`Fraid not Frogpatch,, !!  Although my Dad sharpened all his sawblades !! Just not with that item !!  I just paint them occasionally,, I try not to use them !!  But I certainly know how !!

I just read "In the Heart of the Sea". This is the true story about "Moby Dick". The real story took place in Nantucket. Any kind of fishing in those days seemed really scary.
The ships were at sea for 2 to 3 years. The crew would get in tiny boats and have to stab the whale. Crazy! I can't imagine having to dry your lines after you've been fishing all day. :) This is probably for leisure fishing?

Those were whaling ships Greenacres. The blubber of the whale was rendered down to oil to use for lamp light. Where my fathers family was from near Sandy Hook NJ, fishing, clamming and crabbing was how a man helped feed his family. It was free protein for those who had the skill and cheap protein for those who could barter or buy. Fishing was catching back then and the idea was to get a chum slick out, get you bait in the slick and yank the fish out of the water. Even as a kid in the 50s I would sit on the dock on the Shrewsbury River next to the drawbridge and use a 9 foot bamboo pole with a line tied to the end and a spearing hooked under a bobber. I would catch and yank small bluefish referred to as snappers, locally. I still fish for them in late summer as they are absolutely delicious when pan fried. The also make great fluke bait.
Red clam chowder is a product of this region too, although food experts will argue that point. I researched it through old newspaper articles and found proof going back to the 1870s plus the stories passed down from my Grandmother. Read my article on why it is New Jersey and not Manhattan clam chowder. I have my family recipe on there too. http://garycunnane.hubpages.com/hub/New-Jersey-Not-Manhattan-Clam-Chowder (http://garycunnane.hubpages.com/hub/New-Jersey-Not-Manhattan-Clam-Chowder)

I don’t know…If that device is actually a saw vise / bench;  it would be a cumbersome task to sharpen a saw blade. Since a file only cuts on the push stroke, you would be trying to work from one side to the other. Any saw vise I've seen always holds the blade parallel to the axis of the bench. Like I said, I don’t know.
I could see it being used as harness makers vise for clamping leather while being stitched, with the surrounding tray holding awls, needles and thread.

We use to catch flounder at the Jersey Shore. "Door Mats" we called them. We would use "Ugly" sticks. The was excellent. It's new. It explained that there was a lot of oil in the heads of the whales. They killed so many whales that they had to sail further and further out to uncharted waters. They came across a rogue whale that was 85 feet that intentionally rammed their boat twice and sank it in open water. They were lost at sea for 90 days.

You would need to go the Dallas area. Maybe Whole Foods if you have one. You can substitute canned with the juice. I am going to go read Wullies post now.

Having been raised near the ocean...it resembled the fishing line dryers/winders...but I wouldn't tell the size of this.  The eye bolt was the tell-tale for me that it was for line or twine!!!

As for the Cullen Skink (I like that...not a normal/everyday name)...I was raised up making this with the leftover smoked fish heads...thus always called by us Smokey Fish Head Chowder!  We would also add in some grated carrot - the sweetness of the carrot would balance out the flavors!  Not enough to be tasted as carrot...but enough to mellow the flavors and add visual interest!

Yepper Mart, Central Market or an asian market would have the clams.

I grew up clamming in Florida.  We would float buckets in innertubes...walk barefoot in the ocean  in usually knee high to waist high water and scrape the ocean floor with a garden rake (looks like a curved pitchfork).  Sounds like scraping rock when you hit one...pry it up and float it!  Nothing like fresh, homemade Clam Chowder, Fried Clams and Fresh Conch Steaks and Conch Chowder!   YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMYYY YYYYY!  I'm sure laws prohit/limit alot of this now!!!

KC. Same techniques different region. They use the tube float method here too. I remember walking the mud flats and the pisser (soft) clams would squirt, giving away thier location, and we would rake them up. After they were steamed we would hold them by the long neck and dip them in butter. Unfortunately I developed a food allergy to them when I got older. I can still eat the other ones raw though. Go figure. We will be going crabbing soon. Do not know what to expect after Sandy

I love conch chowder and conch fritters. I first had it in the Bahamas. I lived on the west coast of Florida between 2004 and 2010 and the shrimp were fresh and still had the heads on. I would cook them in the shell in a ton of butter, garlic and spices and serve them with crusty bread. Peel and eat and dunk the bread. To die for. Fortunately I can get the gulf shrimp here now. No fresh grouper or stone crabs though. I also caught snook and redfish wading in the bay. Delicious!

Now I am hungry for seafooooooooooooddd dddddddd!

So sorry you developed the allergy.

When I was at the farmer's market in Shreveport this past weekend they were selling Shrimp Tamales, Crawfish Tamales, Crab Tamales and Black bean tamales.  Only problem...they were sold out when I went to buy some!!!!!!  Man.....I was bummed!!!!!!!  Those with a thick Chowder-like sauce on it would be amazing!!!!

a few years ago, whilst i was touring Europe..on my motorcycle....No,Avril in tow...she hated bikes....i met some Greeks...who came from the island of Samos...they said that if i was ever over in Greece...i would be welcome to stay at there house....well, a couple of years later,i got a one off job..of delivering a high spec Toyota Landcruiser...to a guy who lived in Izmir..in Turkey...to get there it was a 6 day drive, with 3 ferry crossings,..one of which was from Samos...to Kusadasi...in Turkey....to cut a long story short, i arrived on the door step of these Greeks...who made me very welcome....as my connecting ferry was 2 days away..i had time to relax....the next day, Yannis.....asked me if i,d like to go snorkelling....whil st he went scuba diving...for our lunch...so off we went, we arrived at a little jetty on the far side of the island, he had a small boat....and off we sailed,he anchored just offshore, and then told me just to enjoy myself, and that he,d be gone around 1/2 an hour...so in i went, and it was brilliant, warm clear water,.when he returned he had a net bag that contained 2 Octopus...and about a dozen or more Anemone,s.

when we got back to his house..he prepared lunch,i shied away from the octopus...but was willing to give the anemone,s a try, he told me that to enjoy them at their best, they had to be eated live,...he mixed up some fresh lemon juice with a little olive oil,...spooned a little into the anemone shell, then handed me a chunk of fresh baked bread, and showed me what to do....The taste was awesome....
the next day, we went to a cafe in the village, whilst there, i saw.a newspaper headline, which was on a Reuters newspaper...."local man attacked by Great White"...i asked Yannis what this was about, and he told me that a fisherman,on the island had, been attacked by a Great White, whilst, sitting with his legs dangling over his boat...when i asked him..where this had happened..he laughed...and said...about 2 kms from where i was swimming....and that Great Whites were common in the Med,and in fact they bred, between Turkey and Cyprus....suffice to say..i,ve never been in a sea since.....see pic of the anemone.....,

A quote from Garrison Keillor's book - "Lake Wobegon Days"

Every Advent we entered the purgatory of lutefisk, a repulsive gelatinous fishlike dish that tasted of soap and gave off an odor that would gag a goat. We did this in honor of Norwegian ancestors, much as if survivors of a famine might celebrate their deliverance by feasting on elm bark. I always felt the cold creeps as Advent approached, knowing that this dread delicacy would be put before me and I'd be told, "Just have a little." Eating a little was like vomiting a little, just as bad as a lot.

I just had lunch and I open this up to a pic of someone hurling. Thanks Wullie.

Back on topic. We returned to that sale again early this AM and I got some better photos of that thing that is supposed to be a saw blade vice. As well as another whatsit. When Wifey comes home from having lunch and drinks on the dock, on this lovely sunny 78 degree day with her friend, while I write web pages on automated driveway gates, I will get her cell phone and post the pictures. That may be tomorrow because as soon as I am done I am having my own happy hour.

By the way she is eating squid. She calls it calamari. I use it for bait. It does taste good deep fried; but what doesn't?

Nothing. I don't own it. I just want to know what it is. The owner swears its for sharpening saws because some local old timer said his father had one. I have my doubts. He wants 125.00 for it. It would serve me no purpose and I have no use for conversation pieces. I can hold a conversation on my own without a piece.

Sapphire, first of all my father use to call my mother Sapphire after what the Kingfish in Amos n Andy used to call his wife. You are probably not that old to remember that TV show or radio show.. It would never fly today as it was a bit racist.
Yes there are two blades that form a clamp. You step down on the pedal and the blades clamp down on something that is flat.

Mart, You actually can understand what he is saying and what it refers to? "stuck the gither?" I kind of get it but what does it have to do with. Oh wait I think I am getting it. A piece is a sandwich. I learned that in the movie Geordie, a 1955 classic with  Biil Travers, Allistair Sims and Norah Gorsen. So one of jam would be a way to have a conversation. They are yummy. Butter is better for you than marg Wullie. Marg is full of trans fat, at least in the US. Butter may be high in sat fat but look how healthy Mart is along with other farming people.

frogpatch I was looking at the angle of the clamps I found and although they can be changed (most are swivel/ball joint) they still seem to keep the blade in a near upright position. I watched my dad sharpen his saws squatting on the outside steps with the say lain across his knees, sharpening away from himself, rather than in the upward position most of those clamps would see to require. That's what got me wondering if yours was made/altered specifically for or by someone who found it more comfortable or easier to work with.

As for Amos and Andy.........I do remember the last years  ;) Sapphire was dad's nickname for me........lord only knows where he came up with that, certainly wasn't from my big brown eyes.  :D

Here are the new pictures. Much better detail. Please tell me what you think.

Well now, it has the same type of “jaws” as a saw-sharpening vice (see pic below) …… but unless that “foot pedal” is a locking mechanism to hold the saw blade FIRMLY in place …. then I don’t think it is a “saw sharpening” bench.

Now I have never heard of one but it could be a “tin-bender’s” workbench because he used a lot of different tools …… whereas a saw-sharpener only needed 2 tools.
