Title: Is all caned furniture antique?
Post by: debodun on June 23, 2013, 09:33:34 AM
I've been trying to sell this 4-leg caned-seat stool for $25 for 2 years. I advertised it as an antique, but at one of my garage sales, a man said it wasn't an antique because the seat was in too good shape and offered me $2. Quite a difference in the asking price! I refused, of course. Now I am wondering if it is an antique.

it looks like its been re-caned...and this is what is putting people off....either that..or he was just a cheapskate....with deep pockets....and short arms....as for all caned furniture being antique....in a word...no...

Your asking price might be a tad high for today's market, but $25 wouldn't come close for paying someone to re-cane it.

Probably not antique but certainly vintage and well worth $25. !!  Especially if its a small stool !!

No, not all cane is old.

If you want you can stain the cane to look "older" to match the rest of the stool.   strong glass of tea or coffee can do the trick!!

Looks recaned!

$10 - $15 in my area tops.

It is a nice looking piece. Why sell it? Use it for a plant stand or displaying something.

I can't get a better photo at the moment. I've packed up my estate sale until at least August. The stool is buried underneath all my "stuff".

Stay with that price !! I would not take less !! Does not look like it has been re-caned to me !! But was just left natural and waxed !!  Next time you have an item like this or any small furniture piece,,remember to take a pic of the underside !! It usually tells much more about an item than the top does !!

So true Mart about a pic of the underside.

I have had waxed cane before...but when it is "old" the waxing wears and shows wear.  Can't tell from this pic...but it looks newer.  One of those that needs a close up hands on.

Yep !!  Underside would tell more !!   I think this stool is probably 40ish so not very old but even then, to have one re-caned would have been costly for most families.  And there is enough grunge around the perimeter of it to tell it wasn`t done recently so that's why I said not re-caned !!  But looks like we may not know more till August !! Huh KC ???

Well KC !!  I think you were right,, it was re-caned  and looks like it was done by someone not very experienced !! I noticed looking at the top that the holes in the pattern were not even but thought it may have been because something heavy had been on it !!  Guess not !!

Yep.  Looks like something I would have done!  :)  Alot of times it is "your guess is as good as mine" without a hands-on inspection!

Still a great stool. AND you need to tout that it was re-caned in the past so that it is strong and will stand up to lots of future wear-n-tear!  Use it to your advantage!

Thanks for all the advice. It seems too bad that old quality furniture is passed by at estate sales. Seems people would rather throw away their money on "big box" store stuff that will fall apart in a few years.

what you have to remember is....not everyone wants to live with old furniture....its only as you get older, that you begin to cherish what your parents and grandparents had....

not everyone wants to live with old furniture

True. Or, as a decorator recently put it, " I dont care about antiques, i care about interesting things to live with". Antique furniture is not what it was several years ago for many reasons, will it come back into fashion in a big way? sure, but i have no idea when.

If someone doesnt fix whatever problem this site is having with posting photo's, i predict a dim future here as pic's are kinda vital to this forum. It could be the technology has become dated and is getting to be rather antique-ish in internet terms. Why not update the machinery?

Still, i think $25 is about right for your stool, $2 is way to low. Cane seated furniture has been around forever and, is still being made today.

have you ever thought it might be...your equipment thats not up to the job,...i had a problem at the start, but then when i found that my camera could be set to take pics that were website friendly,my problem disappeared

no, dont think so. First off, i am on a brand new desk top with 50 megs of speed and, the photos i have been trying to post are proven links, not photos i have just shot with a cam and converted to jpg links. Finally, i post on other antique forums, no issues at all with posting jpg links (photo).

We had some pic problems not long ago and they thought it was repaired !!  Maybe not !! Has anyone emailed the site owner or told Talesofthesevenseas the mod. ??  If not,,might be a good thing to do Jacon4 since you can tell them what happened when you tried to post pics !! I haven`t posted anything in a while but never had any more problems than usual considering I am on dial up !!
Title: Re: Is all caned furniture antique?

what happens is, when you click post, the site stalls, which leads to clicking post again which might lead to double posts. since a site like this is so dependent on photo's, if folks are having problems, eventually that will lead to people going somewhere else to post. just saying......

"Who is hosting the forum?"
The Simple Machines copyright at the footer of the forum software does not indicate that we are the host - rather it indicates that we are the company that owns copy rights to the forum software, much like Microsoft owns the copyright to the code behind Microsoft Word. If you would like to determine the host, you should look at the WHOIS information for the domain name.

Alrighty then, it's looking to me at the moment that the problem could be with the Host of this site and, according to WHOIS, the host is PowWeb. If you Google review/ratings of PowWeb  as a hosting service the results are pretty bad.

Title: Re: Is all caned furniture antique?

What is PowWeb ??  Wouldn`t the site owner be the one to fix the problem ??
Title: Re: Is all caned furniture antique?
Post by: jacon4 on June 29, 2013, 08:42:54 AM
Mart, the site owner owns the domain name only, they have to have a hosting service to put the site on the internet unless they happen to have their own server which most sites do not, if this makes any sense to you.
PowWeb is a hosting service that broadcasts web sites on the internet, if your site has a poor host, you have a poor web site, get it?
Bottom line? It might be time for domain owner to shop around for a new web host.

lol, good deal, at least we got THAT goin for us. Getting a good host isn't as easy as it sounds. Since there are only 2 "moving" parts to this forum, the software that operates the forum & the host that puts it on the web, it pretty much has to be one or the other.
