It has a crank and the horizontal plate with the teeth turns. This should be easy. I have no idea however. They guy has two of the and there were a lot of farms in the area at one time. It was wedged between two shelves and I was afraid I would cause a catastrophe if I tried to move it. I would guess all the open work was to help to clean it. The glass jar is not part of it.

I know, I know...it's a "Corn Sheller". Put in one ear at a time and end up with a empty cob. Yours even has the little attachment on the outside so you can get those last few kernels off the small end of the ear.
Here's a high priced example:

Wow. You really nailed that one. The only difference is the example you showed had the red paint. The tag on the one in the picture was for 85.00. I could have gotten it for a lot less but my wife was rrrrrr..rr..right. I don't need it.
-
Darn Rauville,, beat me to it !! I can use one of those now !! Had enough corn to supply two more families for the winter get tough in the field !!
-
Looks like "farm sculpture." I think your wife was wrong about the rocker but right about this.
-
Yep, nailed it!
So sorry to hear about the corn Mart. You did good though!!
-
Just had an unusually good year for corn !! Everything fell right !! Gave corn to half the community,, other half was too lazy to come pick it !!
Same with green beans !!
-
So what's the weather been like for the corn to be unusually good ?
-
Ohhhhh mart if I lived near you I would be pickin till the cows came home!! ;) Love my veggies and can never get enough but there is nothing like home grown!!
-
Looks like "farm sculpture." I think your wife was wrong about the rocker but right about this.
she was right about both of them.....bosses are always right...even when you may think they are wrong....for as Wendy,says..happy wife.=.happy life....
-
Nonsense. A spoiled wife is a spoiled life!
-
Really ghopper my husband spoils me like crazy & he gets waited on hand and foot plus gets whatever he wants whenever he wants!! ;) ;) ;)
-
you,re out on a limb here ghopper...nobody said anything about spoiling....but since you have brought it up,...i,d give Avril the Moon if i could...and she,d do the same for me......but we don,t have a spoiled life.....we enjoy..every waking moment we have together....mind you its a different story when i,m sleeping....She want to throttle me... ;D....she just can,t stand my 76 decibels...belting out continuously....
-
I like Wendy' response.
You however....... ;D
-
The only difference is the example you showed had the red paint.
HA, a stiff wire brush and a $2 can of red spray paint and ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
So what's the weather been like for the corn to be unusually good ?
That means we planted early and got rain to germinate the corn,, then after it was about a foot tall, we side dressed with fertilizer and again got the rain to get the fertilizer down to the roots,, then we came back later and laid it by with ammonium nitrate and again got the rain when we needed it !! Just an unusually good year !! Its all about the water with corn !! Probably still 200 ears or more left in the field !!
-
The only difference is the example you showed had the red paint.
HA, a stiff wire brush and a $2 can of red spray paint and ;D ;D ;D ;D
Most I have seen that had any paint left were yellow !!
-
Ohhhhh mart if I lived near you I would be pickin till the cows came home!! ;) Love my veggies and can never get enough but there is nothing like home grown!!
Wish you did live here Wendy !! Here you can grow something almost year round !! We always grow much more than we need !! Its kind of a swap out here !! This year we made corn but the peas didn`t do anything..Johnny`s peas did well but his corn didn`t !! We swap so everyone has what they need !!
-
Aaaaah small town live. Not at all like the big city.
-
Yep !! Small town life isn`t dead yet !!!
-
i,ll stick to what comes out of the tin....at least i know its beastie free.... :D :
-
Mmmm,,, not too sure about that anymore !! At least I know how mine is grown and who has handled it !! LLike that bunch of cantaloupe a while back that gave people listeria !!
-
Amen Mart.
If he truly knew what was in the can. You need to see what you country allowances for vermon, dust, etc in your canned items! believe it or not, there are allowances for it!!!!!!
-
Oh mart it sounds wonderful and I would take a small towns home grown food to anything from a big corporation way more in their food than vermon & dust! lets talk about Castoreum - Natural raspberry flavoring and artificial vanilla flavor AKA: Castoreum Is in many main stream products like Raspberry Yoplait, Raspberry juices, Harbio gummy candy, Ben & Jerry's Bohemian Raspberry ice cream. Castoreum is the ooze from the castor sacs of beavers that comes out along with their urine. The FDA has determined it can be listed as natural flavoring! While it is mainly used in both foods and beverages as part of an artificial vanilla flavor, it is less commonly used as a part of a raspberry or strawberry flavoring. The annual industry consumption is very low, around 300 pounds, whereas vanilla is over 2.6 million pounds annually. Natural sure but no thank you!!
-
Such love posted here over a corn sheller. That is why I love this place. You guys are awesome.

yeah..and what about all those pesticides that are used...on all crops....i,ve seen what goes on..both with general farming...and the so called organic...anyway... why should i worry....you die if you worry, you die if you don,t....so,there,s no need to worry....i,ve eaten things in the past that if i,d been told at the start, what it was,i,d never have eaten it in the first place...and i,m still here....my late father used to make his own yogurt....50,s style....no refrigerator....tak e 2 pints of milk...sit on a window ledge,in the sun, leave for a week, until it goes off,...then ....you have home made yogurt...alive and kicking...
when Avril is cooking...she has a favourite saying...which never ceases to bring a smile to my face....i,ll ask...whats for dinner,...she,ll reply..."shite with suger on it"...that,ll do for me.... ;D
-
Well,,, what little pesticide I use is made from chrysanthemums and is used in organics but I also use commercial fertilizer and what fertilizer my horses supply !! But that's not the point,, do you ever think about who handles your food and how many pieces of machinery are used to get it to you ?? And then they treat most everything to keep it from ripening (tomatoes) and from sprouting (potatoes) !! By the time you buy it there is no resemblance in taste to what it actually is !! Believe me I will put my homegrown tomatoes up against anything sitting on store shelves !!
-

Most I have seen that had any paint left were yellow !!
Maybe because rural homeowners in northern states also favored the red variety, to wit. :D :D
(http://www.thenorthstarnews.com/Content/101/yellow-rose-nsn41912.jpg)
Nah, ...... I think red and green were the dominant colors preferred by the manufacturers of farm machinery with black being 3rd.

but the point is...not everyone can...eat homegrown fresh produce....as the cost is so prohibitive...furth ermore..unless you are a veggie,..then, there are many foods, that need to come in some sort of packaging....
-
whilst we are on the subject of the benefits of home grown....pessticide free organic produce....here is, a pic, of what can happen...with these organically grown produce....we were given a large quantity..of rhubarb...i stewed some of it...then...i forgot, to put it in the fridge after it had cooled..2 days later,..i took the lid off the pot....and this is what i had...my point is, had this been treated with pessticides, insecticides..or any other agent, that slows the progress of putrification....th en this rhubarb would not have ended up like this so quickly...
-
..2 days later, ....... sounds like a case of CRS to me. :D :D
-
Pesticides and insecticides does not cause mold which is a fungus !! Different problem there !! I am with Cogar !! CRS !!!
-

you,ve grabbed the wrang end of, the stick,...i,never said it was pesticides or insecticides that caused this fungus....more the lack of them....cos, after finding, this i,went out today and bought a tin of rhubarb in syrup, and i have emptied the tin into a bowl, and it is not in the fridge,...i,ll post a pic of the bowl and its contents...in two days time....
furthermore...over here,..and no doubt over there...cereal crops, would not be harvestable without, the use of pesticides ..here,s an interesting link....and having read every part of it....i think i,ll stick to the tinned variety....
http://www.pesticide.org/get-the-facts/pesticide-factsheets

No one has a problem with pesticides,, if the growers didn`t use them,, no one would eat but the bugs !!
Lack of pesticides does not cause mold !!

Geeze wullie , nice & gross pic of improper food handling !
When I think of 'all organic/natural' products , my little mind goes back to an anti-Coors beer commercial , with a deer taking a tinkle in a clear mountain stream .
Along with what others have said about interior contents of canned goods , one ought to consider all the places the OUTSIDES of the cans & bottles have been !
-
So your point is....because you forgot/left it out and it went bad...then pesticides/preservatives are okay? LOLOLOL You really are a hoot!!!
Improper food storage/handling is exactly that. We have all done it at some time and could kick ourselves for it! Especially when it was something hard to get and YUMMY!!!!
Makes for a great science experiment!!
-
think i,ll blow up that pic, and get it framed, then stick it on our kitchen wall as a reminder, ;D.then again,..maybe not...don,t want Avril, puking everytime she she saw it....but i have to admit....i was in awe,at how quickly the mould formed, and how beautiful it was....if you know what i mean...or maybe i should have bottled it, and used it as a natural antibiotic.....but. ..would have gagged at the thought of using it.... :D
-
Given that I helped start this quabble, maybe I can help put and end to it. Now given Bigwull’s remark of, to wit:
...i forgot, to put it in the fridge after it had cooled..2 days later,..i took the lid off the pot....and this is what i had...
I just responded with a “gotcha”, rather than pointing out a “lapse of memory” on his part. Now being a Biologist, with learned knowledge in Bacteriology, when I first seen the picture of what Bigwull had been growing in his rhubarb pot, I recognized it as most likely being a strain of penicillin mold, to wit: http://kids.britannica.com/elementary/art-87585/Penicillium-mold-is-the-source-of-penicillin (http://kids.britannica.com/elementary/art-87585/Penicillium-mold-is-the-source-of-penicillin)
And my experience told me that it is highly improbable, if not impossible, for that quantity of penicillin mold to reproduce itself within a 2-day time frame. Now the Cholera bacteria is a really fast reproducer and within as little as 12 hours after infection you can be in serious trouble.
But the more important aspect of Bigwull’s comment is the fact that it negates one (1) of the “junk science” claims being touted by the believers in/of AGW (anthropogenic global warming).
An that is their “claim” that the bi-yearly increase in atmospheric CO2 during the winter months is directly caused by the rotting and decaying of dead plant biomass in the Northern Hemisphere.
Well now, the Northern Hemisphere winter is just the same as Bigwull’s refrigerator, ….. they both highly retard and/or prevent the rotting and decaying of plant (rhubarb, etc) biomass. And that is because most every species of bacteria, mold, etc are “unionized” ;D and they don’t work very fast when the temperature falls below 60F, … pretty much quit working at 42F, …. and stop all work at 32F. And iffen they ain’t workin, …. they ain’t producin CO2.
Anyway, if you are going to continue eating then you have to choose 1 or more of the 3 following, options:
1. Feed the insects and microorganisms first and you eat what’s left.
2. Plant and/or eat GMO (genetically modified) food products.
3. Continue using insecticides and herbicides to insure both a quality and quantity food supply.
And that is simply because: “We know insect evolution and weed resistances will continue to happen. It's a part of biology."
Cheers .... and have a great day.
-
whatever kind of mould it was...maybe i should, get posters made of the pic....with a heading....It pays to ...or show a pic of fresh rhubarb, and then that....with a caption Before/After....always refrigerate... ;D

I don't know about the areas where all of you live but one of our huge issues here in NS with crops and food production is the use of biosolids as fertilizer. Just try to contemplate the amount of chemicals ingested by the 'average' person and multiply that by how many? The gross factor aside (but not far aside) the cocktail of drugs being poured into our fields to grow crops is enough to cause nightmares. People come into our market and ask where some specific foods come from........if they are told Mexico or China (as depending on the season we may have no other choice) they will immediately walk away from it, wanting only local. Well folks, 'local' may not all it's cracked up to be. :P
BTW, it's nigh onto impossible to find out which farms and where this delicacy is being spewed into the ground, mainly due to the probable backlash from surrounding homes and communities who's wells and water systems are being contaminated with the leeching.
-
in our local supermarket, they are selling huge watermelons..that have come all the way from Mexico....cost for a 2.5kg one....£2..or $3 each...my question..is...what is the poor Mexican grower getting for 1 when i can buy it here for very little,...it makes me wonder....

Really does make you wonder. The last two winters we were selling carrots........from Israel. ::)
-
Supermarket grapes during the winter months come from Peru.
-
Wow cogar!! This is why I buy all I can from locally grown small farms and freeze for winter months!! I am lucky to have a farm right around the corner from me that raises grass fed beef and we know the farmers very well! I don't want GMO's or to many chemicals so I don't mind if the buggy's have a little to eat too!! ;) My husband thinks I am crazy and would eat pretty much anything but not me!
-
talking about carrots...a few months ago, one of the smaller supermarkets, in my home town,...their customers, who were mainly of muslim origin..were up in arms, when they found out that, some of the produce was coming from Israel,....we get a lot of tinned salmon from Canada....and kangaroo steaks from OZ....no not that OZ.... ;D..and at Christmas time, we can get reindeer venison from Finland,...and around the corner from our house, there is a German supermarket,Lidl....its a cheap place to shop, and there p[roduce comes from all over, Poland, Germany,France, Italy,Spain,...Mexico, Brazil,....you name it, they get it....4 pints of milk...costs £1...which is reasonable...local strawberries are £1 per lb,...but..for me to buy a decent bottle of Malt whisky....then its an average of £35 a bottle...that bot of Lagavulin, that i got a few years back is over £50 in some shops....breads cheap, 2 x loaves...= £1

you and Avril would get on well, Wendy....if she sees a packet that is a minute past its sell by date....its in the bin....and when it comes to eggs..god...phew... .she,s nuts... one day last week, she was doing boiled eggs, i walked into the kitchen, and said, wow, smell those eggs,....she put them in the bin...i said, what did you do that for, she said, you scunnered me when you said that...there was nowt wrong with them...but she thought ,i meant they were off....the same goes if she sees a little mould on a piece of cheese,...bin....mind you i did draw the line with than rhubarb..... ;D.
-
She sounds like my kinda girl!! :D When I cook something and put the leftovers in Tupperware & in the fridge I write on the outside of the Tupperware the date cooked and date it needs to go in the trash, with those bath crayons for kids that wash off!! Hubby just rolls his eyes!!
-
me an your hubby.we must have come from the same mould.....every Christmas i buy a cured pork Polish sausage ring...its called Wiejska..it come,s ready cooked, and when i buy it its very fresh,..it can be eaten, this way, but i prefer to hang it for a few weeks,i remove it from its vacuum pack and hang it in the airing cupboard,..after about 3 weeks, its ready,...it will have shrunk to what resembles a ring of jerky,..i slice it very thinly and when its chewed, the juices start to run.....god, i feel like some now....the first pic is the way it comes, the 2nd is how it ends up

Much simpler here,, I had corn, and other veggies,,my vet had pork so now we have pork sausage and he has corn and other stuff !! The good thing is no one ever says anything !! They just do it !! That's country for you !!

I can't grow anything where I live this year due to lack of space but we are lucky to have many small and medium farms in the area where. is season we can buy fresh produce that is not grown for shipping. Strawberries are at their peak right now. There is a fresh egg farm and butchers who make their own Polish and German sausage. They call it Kielbasa but it looks the same. I am actually heading to the store this weekend to grab a ring. We also have a couple Amish markets where the fresh pork is the best. They are a 90 minute drive but worth a day trip.
Our best asset is that the fishing fleet is docked 5 minutes away where you can get whatever they catch. True story: We wanted some fresh squid and there was none available. They radioed the trawler and asked the Captain when he would be in. He said later that afternoon. My wife asked if he had a couple pounds that we could buy. We were told he had 30,000 pounds if we wanted it. When the ship came in the store owner actually went down in the hold and got us two pounds. I cleaned it and cut it into rings and tentacles and flash fried it with a coating of corn starch and flour. Dipped in a spicy marinara sauce it is awesome. Some people actually save the squid ink and make a black sauce for spaghetti. We like to eat seasonally so we can get the best quality foods. Soft shelled crabs are in season now. I am trying to get some big ones at a good price.
Someone Tweeted that Paula Deen has a recipe for Ku Klux Klams. Not my poor taste. I am only repeating.
Fancypants, I guess you were sorry to hear that Devo's drummer just passed away.
-
Mmmm I love soft shell crabs. :)
-
I'm within walking distance of Puget Sound , so I can get really alive & kickin' crabs here . Drop a ring in & score a few freshies (Red Rock & Dungeness) in about a half hour , on a good day . Some variety of shrimps too , along with the salmon .
There's going to be murder in the kitchen this weekend .
I've been vac-paking my food for quite awhile @ home and find it most effective for keeping whats' what ! I can cook up a mess of stuff & freeze it quik & easy , portions & such for way better than store-bought & helps when unexpected guest need gettin' cooked for too .
bigwull , once upon a time I bought a whole crop of Jaffa oranges (in Israel) & had it picked & packed & transported to Haifa .... by Palestinians ...
but that's enough of true stories ...

fancy that sounds soooooo good. I just had Salmon kabobs last night! Skewered salmon and fresh zucchini and then put onion/mushrooms/ on other skewers aaaannnnddd then put broccoli florets, onions and peppers on others. Getting leftovers tonight! YAYYYYYYYY~~~
Love crab! Just can't spend money on this canned stuff anymore to make crab cakes. Toooo expensive and doesn't have that "fresh" taste. So, just wait until I go seaside!
