Title: Farm tool
Post by: jdanko on June 29, 2013, 08:31:11 PM
I picked this up today and was told that it is the handle from a very old potato harvester. Apparently there was a blade of some sort that went on the bottom and you would drag it along the ground and it would dig up your potatoes. I can't find any pictures that look like it though so I'm hoping someone could either find a photo of this somewhere so I could see what it looked like complete or tell me what it is if its not a potato harvester. Its about 45" tall and there is lettering on the middle ornate part but I can't make them all out. Thanks for any help!

I don`t think so !!  You will not dig potatoes by dragging anything !! I just finished digging two rows in soft sand and that would not have made a dent much less dug anything up !!

Plowing tool. I think you would drag this and plant the seeds or whatever your planting.

I think the words on it say 'Charter Oak'

I think all the folks will be (I hope) happy to hear that you've got yourself a handle assembly from a circa 1875 "Charter Oak" lawnmower , jdanko !
(They were advertised as "So light & simple to run that even a young woman could operate it.")

Thanks so much! I knew it was too neat to leave behind!

You're welcome , jdanko .

Now the task would be finding the rest of the Hills Archimedean Lawn Mower Company's Charter Oak model (as below) !
