Hey guys,
Found a tobacco cutter today.. not so nice anymore but would have looked awesome in it's day. He had $85 on it but I got it for $30. It's a Rock City Tobacco co. cutter, it also says Master Mason on it so I'm thinking it was meant for that tobacco possibly? On the bottom, it says "Enterprise MFG Co. Phila U.S.A. Pat. Jan 20 1885." Not sure if that would be the date it was actually make or not. Maybe just the bottom piece. I don't know. This is my first rusty piece of metal I bought (other then tins and license plates :P) and I really like it. Here are some pics

Would kinda look like my Rival Twist tin if it still had paint on it ;D

Thank you fp. I don't know if I should keep it or sell it - I would love to see it in it's original condition!!

Kevin;
The cutter was a good deal, regardless of condition.

You should be able to turn it for a fair profit, if you decide to sell.

Thanks Rauville. I'd like to sell it and make my money back, but I also want to see it in it's original condition. But I don't know when I'd have the money for that anyway.. If I can get that much for it I'll definitley sell!

Very popular and collectible. Tobacciana items remain popular.

A good brushing/scrubbing with a non-metallic brush & coat of paste wax would up the appeal for a buyer (IMO) , K_B !
Easy & cheap to do .

great cutter....ideal for removing stuck on gold rings from fingers....an them as well ;D
-
FP, good idea, do you think it would take any of the paint off? Well, what's left of the paint... Mostly just rust now, but I really like the little bit of paint that's left over. I would love to see this thing in it's original condition.
Bigwull, good thinkin ;D

Waxing your cool little item should not remove any of the paint , K_B .
There may be loose paint near the edges/margins of the still-painted areas , but it may be knocked off by simply brushing it (not so likely) ... but if so , it's loose & is gonna fall off anyways .
The main idea here is to stop/arrest the current oxydation on your item via sealing it off from the atmosphere (& give it a better/more uniform appearance) .
A paste wax , such as what would be used for furniture (Johnson&Johnsons , etc.) , will do the job .... but don't use 'car wax' .
Some would suggest that you could use black shoe polish (paste-type) or stove-black as well ...plain old paste wax works well enough , though , & has no pigment .
