Title: Antique Ceramic Jug
Post by: myracles103 on July 23, 2013, 09:42:36 AM
This jug is well over 100 years old. From my great grandfather's house. It has an "A" stamped on it towards the bottom of the outside. Any information on the history/maker/value of this would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Dr. T.R. Morris

I think that some of the "single letter" marks on jugs and crocks (especially Albany slip items) were to identify the merchant where they originated from and were intended to be returned to. If you went to the store for a gallon of vinegar and didn't bring your own container, the storekeeper would loan you one.
Most small towns might only have one or two stores and a simple capital letter would suffice to prove ownership.
The hand turned Albany slip jugs generally date back to pre 1900. After that the zinc glaze finish started becoming popular.

Rauville has this one exactly correct in my opinion. It is a hand turned piece and the shape is a little different than the examples shown. You can see the turning marks in the piece that are not present in the others. I have owned several Albany slip pieces and the jugs had the ovoid shape. The straight sided pieces were later and more common. The ID using one letter is what I have read also. I would put a value on this piece at around 95.00 where I live. I like it.

On a second note the first example does look hand turned when I tilted my screen for better contrast.

As long as we are talking about stoneware...looking at the sale results of an auction last weekend, and found this interesting. Gosh, 230K just doesn't go as far as it used to!

Thanks for all your help.

It is an old Molasses Jug-- which explains the spout.

And Mart, I am located in North Carolina.

Saw almost identical jugs in Canada but those were imprinted with the store name,, that's why it is good to know what a persons location is !!  If it held molasses,, which was a staple in most households,, then Rauville and Frogpatch had this jug pegged !! It would have been carried back and refilled when it ran out !!

Myracles, aka Dr. T. R. Morris, can you please clarify if there is any indention/symbols on the bottom.  My eyes are most likely deceiving me...but it appears on the top left quarter there may be an impression and on the bottom right side something as well?!?!?

Also, please clarify if this is in fact brown or an ashen black/brown.

Somewhere locked inside the vaults of my mind...we have had a jug come across here that the finish was done with ash.  This kindof feels like that and I CAN"T FIND IT!!!!  Argh......

No more inscriptions on the jug than the small "A." It is a dark brown almost black finish

Okay forum folk....I seem to remember about some jugs that were put into the ashes to finish them which ended up producing a black/brown jug. Anyone have memory that can be "jogged"...mine is on a slow walk here lately!!!!
