Title: Old English Pewter Sugar Bowl and What?
Post by: KevinM on July 24, 2013, 10:07:25 PM: This is another recent purchase that I'm a little puzzled with. It's an Old English Pewter Hand Hammered Footed Sugar Bowl and another footed bowl that I'm not sure would be used for?

Both the bottoms of the bowls have stamped Old English Pewter Hand Hammered. The "Old" seems to be stamped over with another hallmark or something on both bowls.

Both bowls measure about 2 1/2 inches in width and have cobalt blue glass inserts in each of them. The Sugar Bowl came with the hand hammered spoon. The Sugar Bowl also has a lot of numbers written on the bottom of it.

Does anyone know what the second bowl would be used for, what the stamp over the "Old" is, and when they may have been made (I'm thinking early 1900's)?

Post by: KC on July 24, 2013, 10:53:59 PM: I'm wondering if you have a mustard pot with spoon or for preserves. And actually you can find lots of open sugar bowls!

You don't usually see these lined for sugar but for acidic items.

Can you read the word after Old ?? Think that's just an error rather than an overstrike !! Remember pewter is a soft metal !!

Second line is Hand Hammered.

AND honestly with a glass liner...it could be caviar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by: KC on July 27, 2013, 09:53:48 AM: Right-o Mart. I was meaning the open one! I know very well you don't use silver with caviar!!! It is sad that so many throw away the gorgeous shell, ivory, bone, horn spoons for caviar because they think they look "cheap" but THEY AREN'T!!!!
