Hi
I hope someone can help me or give me some information. I have a rather heavy bronze table lamp, it's a woman holding a basket of fruit with 3 frosted lamps above her head. .I cannot find any stamps or signature on the piece anywhere. I have searched the internet and found similar pieces, but nothing at all on this particular one. Are there any makers that did not sign their pieces? I have attached a photo... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

digital camera,s work better....as for the welcome....what did you expect...after posting a pic like that....not everyone on this forum as a laptop.....
-
I'll give it a shot......though copying the 'sideways' one it turned up in my album right way up, so not sure which way it'll flip in the transition.
Lisa, could you take off a shade or two and get some close ups of the electrical components. Is the base fixed to the figure or can it be removed or opened in any way? Do you have any history on the lamp and where are you located?

This one might help ... (welcome to the forum , BTW , Lisa1976 !) ...

Good heavens fancypants.....than k you! I totally forgot to include the photo! :P

my what a difference...just goes to show what can be achieved....Mart..w ill be pleased.... ;D
-
looks more like helter spelter...than bronze....
-
thank you Fancypants!!!! It was bought at an antique shop that was going out of business.. I know nothing about it at all. It was a beautiful piece and i couldn't pass it up. The base does not come off... it seems to be all one piece. i tried the magnet trick.. the Posts where the lamp shades are seem to be metal, but the actual base i thought was bronze.. it weighs a good 40 pounds or so. I've tried countless times to find info about it on the Internet.. To no avail. I have more pictures.. And again, I do not have a laptop or a digital camera. So I apologize ahead of time for the pictures. I am located in NC

my reference to a laptop pic...was me telling you, that in order to view your pic i had to turn my laptop round, and that not everyone on this forum has one..but now that fancy has so kindly, posted it the correct way up...all is well, ;) :)

Delightful little bronze figural table lamp , Lisa1976 !
I can certainly see how it held/holds appeal to you !
I am very curious to see ( in the event that you might provide one or two pics) one of the 'tulip-style' lampshades (disassembled/removed) & it's mounting hardware on the lamp itself .
Sometimes bronze pieces are hand-engraved , in some cases with less than 1/8 of an inch tall lettering/markings , and such sigs can take a really good going-over with a 10x magnifier or better , to find (these marks are once-in-awhile well hidden & in unexpected places) !
Can't really tell for sure from your pics , but there appears to be terminal-block type electrical connections in the base of your item ... is this so , or am I seeing things ?
-
no you,re not seeing things..its a terminal block.....which would indicate a recent rewire...by recent i mean anytime in the last good few years...
-
More pics.. I have always thought that the lamp shades and rod looked out of place, could it be possible that this was originally a statue...but made into a lamp after the fact?
-
I would call this a "Newel Post Lamp".
Am I seeing right, are those Phillips head screws on the bracket holding the upright rods to the back of the figure?
-
Yes you are correct Rauville... Those are Phillip screws... That's what made me always think it looked out of place.. The rod with the electrical components seem to be attached on after the fact.. Like it was saudered. Or that could just be how it was made .. too look old.. I have no clue.. :(
-
Thank you!!! Now that I know what kind of lamp it is... I can do a little bit more research and hopefully get some info on where it came from!
-
Are you sure it made of metal or just patinated to look like it ?? Its way too shiny for bronze !! Looks almost like those ceramic types from the 40`s that were so heavy they felt like marble but were colored like bronze !! !!
-
I'm really not sure now what it's made of.. I tried a magnet and it doesn't stick to the actual figure but does to the rods and leaves at the top. I know it must weigh about 40 pounds or so. There is no peeling but I did notice on a closer look that there is some green coloring ... Not like rust or patina.. But like the actual statue might have been green at some point in its life. I'm still not able to find any mark or stamp on it anywhere..but I am happy to find out now what kind of lamp it is.. :-)

First of all I love the look of the lamp!
Second, there was a large antique importer near us that brought in lots of "reproduction" pieces (furniture, lamps, decor pieces, etc that they stated were reproductions) in the late 90's to early 2000's. Although gorgeous to look at, when inspected closely by folks like us, we would see the signs that they were in fact reproductions.
This reminds me of some that I saw at their place. Still gorgeous...just not antique. Most were metal that were painted to look like the aged patina one would see in an older piece. I suspect this is like those...which have been imported by dealers across the country.
Hope I am wrong...but suspect this.
-
I agree KC, I believe it's a reproduction. GG
-
Well...it's a great conversation piece and everyone loves it.. It would suck to be a reproduction ..but hey that's ok. I've had it about 24 years now, and I've always wondered about it. It's great to finally get some info about it.
-
Any guesses on what it's actually made of? One person said possibly marble and painted like bronze, because of how heavy it is..
-
The ones that I have seen are made of spelter which can have a high level of lead in them which could make it quite heavy. It's still a beautiful piece & the originals aren't going for much these days compared to what they were. Most of the originals that I've had come through the shop have condition issues which are hard to repair. GG
-
Thank you all so much!! You have been such a great help!! I bought it because it was a beautiful piece, not for monetary value or antiquity and It's great to finally know some information on it.

Not marble but a composite material !! Get something sharp and scratch the bottom !! True bronze would be a deep dark coppery color !! Yes patinated spelter (pot metal) is also very heavy !!
-
Boy, Rauville you have good eyes. :)
