Looks gold but 99% certain its Silver as its hall marked as its very tarnished.
not sure weather to clean :S ??? or what to use if I do.
Is there any good silver and gold mark links or will I need a book?
Cant get a very good macro shot but will have another attempt in daylight.

Looks like sterling to me, perhaps gold filled, plated. washed, etc... Cool item, looks to be a pendant locket to be worn around the neck on a chain and store a picture or other item in it.
The marks look English but not sure. The first mark (after flipping/rotating image) looks like the English Standard mark of a Lion, The Second looks like the City Mark of a Leopard, can't tell if it's crowned or not. The Third looks like the Bust of a Duty Mark, can't tell which one, the Hallmarks would have to be cleaned. It also looks like you have the Makers Mark on the inside Flap of the Envelope, clean that up too (I would, otherwise take a jewelers loop and look at the marks, it's your call really. Could lose the Gold wash though, if that's what it is).
Try looking your mark up here, if this link doesn't find it then search around on that site. http://www.925-1000.com/british_marks.html

Try cleaning with plain old ketchup and soft cloth then wash well !!

You have a stamp holder!!!!! I remember a relative having one of these, so I knew what to search for...

Depending on your hallmarks (which I can't read except the 3 castles in the middle so it could be English or Scottish)

Good ID KC!! Now that makes perfect sense, should have been kind of obvious. Cool item...

The three marks in a row say it's Chester but the date mark is unclear. The mark above these is the makers mark - Albert Jenkins. Early 20th century - Edwardian or Great War period.

A stamp holder makes perfect sense.. ;D
I thought it was for holding a love letter or a photo like a locket.
Many Thanks
